Show Vernal Express Wednesday, August 22, 200 C3 Haws - hard work brings planes to July A pairades ft fata Hollis Haws was honored . by the Vernal City Council on Wednesday for his continued service with the city's Fourth of July parade, specifically for his ability to coordinate a military flyover during the parade. Haws is familiar with the Air Force way of life, having spent 20 years in the service as a ground support equipment specialist. He was responsible for the equipment used in aircraft -maintenance. "I went around the world twice with the Air Force," said Haws, who was stationed in such places as France, Germany, Turkey, Morocco, Greece, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, and numerous place in the states. Born and raised in the Ashley Valley, Haws married his wife in 1962 while stationed in Colorado Springs and she went with him to Japan, Texas, New Mexico, and finally Arizona. , "I retired in 1974 while in Phoenix," he said. "(It) was way too hot with too many people so we came back home to Vernal to retire." Haws said that for years Vernal Ver-nal never had an Independence Day Parade. He described a bunch of veterans getting together to-gether in about 1991 and deciding decid-ing that it was time to organize a Fourth of July parade. , During the planning for the parade, Haws' son was stationed at Hill Air Force Base. He said his son asked if the organizers were going to have a flyover. When his son found out that there were no plans for a flyover,' he said "Let me see what I can do." "I don't know exactly how he arranged it, but they came and that was how I got interested in getting them here and making' the flyover part of the plans for ourFourthofJulyparade,"Haws said. :. .. . ' " . . Now Haws starts working on the event in the spring because it takes about 120 days to fill out the military forms, with; signatures frommayorandother elected officials, send them to FFA officials in Salt Lake City for their approval and then on to the Pentagon for final approval. From there a copy goes to 419th Fighter Wing Reserve Group at Hill Air Force Base, ; who have been coming to Vernal for quite a number of years. "I stand out in the street and salute them and cry when they fly over," said Haws about how he feels during the flyover. "I get a little sentimental about it. I served my country and they are serving our country as well and I want to show people here in Vernal that there are people willing to protect our country today." '- The city's recognition ofHaws last week was for arranging the flyovers for the past 16 years, and while he is still breathing, he said. And he wiH continue to coordinate the flyover for the parade. "You have to do the process pro-cess just so or it gets out of hand fast," he said. "I understand the military functions and if I have a question I blow who to call and I can get answers. Some civilian -; people might have a problem of knowing how and who to talk to." . In the end, Haws made no apologies about who he does all the work for. "I do it more for myself than anyone else. I hope others enjoy it, but I really do." Roosevelt looks at new pool Vernal City Mayor Allan Mashburn presents a certificate for a job well done to Hollis Haws, who has been scheduling the flyover of military planes during the Fourth of July parade in Vernal. Uintah Basin Newt Service Area residents looking to .escape the heat with a dip in the Roosevelt City swimming pool found no relief for most of last week because of the pool's closure due to a broken valve. The backwash valve broke last Tuesday morning, causing water in the pool to shoot out of the drains rather than circulate. Later that evening, during a meeting of the Roosevelt City Council, authorization to form a committee in charge of researching research-ing a new pool was granted. The formation of the committee and the broken valve had little to do with each other, said Roosevelt City Councilman Guy Coleman, who teaches swimming lessons at the pool. "The idea for a new pool has been in the air for a little over a year now," Coleman said. "The breaking of a simple little valve was insignificant." The current pool was built more than two decades ago and Coleman said that age was the main reason for wanting to replace the pool The life expectancy expec-tancy of a swimming pool is about 20years. : , ' Coleman has been put in charge of forming the new com-mittee, com-mittee, which will look into all aspects of a new pool The group will discuss where the new pool should be located, the design of the facility, and costs for con-, struction. Coleman was given permission by the City Council to spend "a couple thousand dollars" dol-lars" for an architect to draft a preliminary plan for the pool "We want people that would be interested and are knowledge-- knowledge-- able about swimming who can . lookatallaspectsandmakegood decisions," Coleman said, y . The committee will also explore ex-plore possible additions to the new pool, such as a small slide, a kid's spray park, and other fun additions. Coleman said it is not : yet known when a new pool, if v one is built, would be open to , the public. " '. ; c . . "It could be one year or it . could be three or four, it is all speculation right now," he said. ; Funding for the new pool ' will come from monies collected through Roosevelt's Zoo, Arts and Parks tax, which was ap-' , proved by the voters in November 2005. The ZAP tax - an added one-tenth of 1 percent on the city's sales tax rate - generated ; about $150,000 last year. The city may also seek a loan from i the Utah Permanent Commu-; Commu-; nity Impact Fund Board for the project, and could apply to the Duchesne County Commission for revitalization funds as well.. The existing swimming pool was reopened Thursday after , crews received and installed the , part needed to repair the back-flow back-flow valve. '( L iJni .
