Campaign Continued from page B2 inwithiotiples fifc alTBtAgerbT-" dating, marriage" and dirce,' to make sure the advice isn't coming solely from single men sworn to celibacy. In future will be directed more narrowly at Catholic couples. A pastoral letter, due outwithintheyear, will reinforce the theology of heterosexual marriage as a sacrament. The bishops also plan to develop brochures bro-chures and counselingresources for priests. For now, the ad campaign is designed with ecumenical appeal. ap-peal. There are no references to the Catholic Church until the end of each spot, when the announcer promotes the campaign's Web site, www.ForYourMarriage.org. The couples interviewed appear to come from a variety of backgrounds; back-grounds; one woman wears a traditional Muslim head scarf. The church is not buying air-time air-time for the ads; it's trying to get them placed as 30- and 60-second public-service announcements on radio, network TV and cable outlets nationwide. So far, the campaign has cost $600,000 in parishioner donations. dona-tions. Much of that has gone to develop the Web site, which offers spot polls ("Was the last fight you had with your spouse worth it?"), compatibility quizzes and the marriage tip of the day. Those tips are often grimly resolute in nature, such as this one: "Love is not simply a feeling; feel-ing; it is a decision...When the feeling fades and it will at times recommit to building your relationship." That's not a very gauzy view of romance, but sociologists and counselors say it's a vital dose of reality in an era when close to 50 percent of first marriages, 60 percent per-cent of second marriages and 75 percent of third marriages end in divorce. Catholics are less likely than Protestants to divorce, but faith leaders say they still see far too many ruptured and rocky unions. Historically, their church has not been much help. , Many Protestant pastors especially in hip evangelical mega-churches regularly devote sermons to practical advice ad-vice on communication, conflict resolution, even sex. But those topics rarely come up in Catholic homilies, Grabowskisaid. Priests often require couples to attend counseling before the wedding, but some Christian counselors say they're hard-pressed to find parish-based programs to strengthen existing marriages. The couples interviewed in the bishops' TV spots suggest ways large and small to nurture a marriage: Set up a date night; send a loving e-mail; clean the house without being asked. "I flirted with my husband like when we first got married. That's what I did for him this morning. And it made him happy," one middle-aged woman says. As president of the Christian Family Movement, a lay organization organi-zation promoting good relationships, relation-ships, Lauri Przybysz didn't think she needed such tips; after all, she and her husband have been together 34 years. Butwhen she saw the ads, she realized she could be doing better. "It made me more romantic in my choice of gifts for his birthday," birth-day," Przybysz told the Times. "I didn't just get him golf shirts. I got him cologne." Low-cost HPV vaccine available to Utah women "".Ufi .(IrStulltl-J , j J.zJ l to VVcstsm Park 1) A'rrrd ct 2 p.m. Uintah County Fair, , -. The Utah Department of Health is offering low-cost vaccines vac-cines to prevent the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) to eligible women in Utah - specifically, women between the ages of 19-26 who have no health insurance or have insurance that does not pay for the vaccine. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S., causing genital warts and up to 70 percent of all cervical cer-vical cancers. The vaccine was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in June 2006 and is effective against the four strains of the virus that cause the majority of health problems. "The vaccine is a huge step forward in eliminating cervical cervi-cal cancer and saving women's lives," said UDOH Executive Director Dr. David N. Sundwall. "However, we want to remind women that the vaccine will not eliminate the need for annual pap screenings because it does not protect women from all types of HPV that cause cancer." It is estimated that at least 50 percent of sexually active people will get HPV at some time in their lives. Although the majority of these infections cause no symptoms, persistent genital HPV infection can cause cervical cancer in women and other types of anal and genital cancers and genital warts in both men and women. The incidence of invasive cervical cer-vical cancer in the United States has decreased significantly over the last 40 years because of widespread wide-spread use of Pap testing, which can detect lesions on the cervix before they become cancer. The Center's for Disease Control Con-trol and Prevention recommends the HPV vaccine for girls 1 1 and 12 years of age and is given in a series of three injections over a six-month period. The vaccine is also recommended for girls and women 13 through 26 years of age who did not receive it when they were younger and may be given at the same time as other vflccincs. The UDOH is able to fund the low-cost vaccines for women ages 19-26 becauseofa$l million donation from Utah industrialist Jon Huntsman, Sr. in April. Additionally, Ad-ditionally, qualifying adolescents and teens may receive the vaccine through the CDC's Vaccines for Children Program. There is a small fee charged to administer the vaccine. For a list of locations where the vaccine is available, call 1-800-717-181 lor for more information visit www. utahcancer.org. 0 0 0 ft s 1 1 TRUSTED SECURE RESPECTED Since 1907.
