Many of these bright, young people aspired early in their school ca-ieer ca-ieer to one day hold the Sterling Scholar title, and all of them Ihink it an honor to be nominated. nomi-nated. I The Sterling Scholar Awards Were first organized in 1962. The purpose of the program is to publicly recognize outstanding high school seniors in the state if Utah and encourage the pursuit pur-suit of excellence. Nominated $tudents are eligible for cash scholarships and tuition wavers from participating institutions. '. Emily Anne Henderson I Family and Consumer Science Emily Henderson said being art of the Sterling Scholar pro-ram pro-ram is a really cool experience, he always got good grades in chool and strove to be a lead-r, lead-r, and now all the hard work las paid off. ' -fl-.-. lhafi Furnishings J Kelti Kitchen Dance Kelli Kitchen said to be part of the Sterling Scholar group, and to have that title, is awesome. awe-some. She is passionate about dance and plans to graduate from BYU in dance education. Kelli already substitute teaches at Piner Academy of Dance on occasion and would love to run her own studio some day. Right now she focuses on ballet, but also enjoys other types of dance, as well as choreographing to favorite fa-vorite songs. She attended a two-week two-week dance camp at BYU last summer where she practiced modern and jazz. Kayla Lyn Batty Trade and Technical Education Kayla Batty is following in the footsteps of her sister, who was also named Sterling Scholar awhile back. Throughout high school, Kayla has focused on agriculture education, taking animal science, biology, nursery landscaping, and summer agriculture agri-culture courses. This particular field has greatly affected her, and she plans to continue her education educa-tion at USU in Logan. Kayla will also graduate this spring with an associate's degree in business busi-ness from USU in Vernal She has been involved in the National Nation-al FFA Organization, serving as Uintah Chapter President last year, and is currently running for State FFA office. Jennifer Elizabeth Daniel Speech and Drama Ever since junior high, Jennifer Jenni-fer Daniel wanted to be a Sterling Scholar. The speech and drama category was a likely choice for her as she has been involved in 14 productions since that time. Besides musicals, dances, and dramas, Jennifer has also participated par-ticipated in Model UN and mock trials. She plans to go to BYU, probably to pursue a degree in English, and be part of the ballroom ball-room dancing team there. I I Li it Derrick James White Science Derrick White said he was surprised sur-prised to be nominated a Sterling Ster-ling Scholar Science is one. of his favorite subjects, although he also enjoys math. Derrick is president of the math dub, a member of the swim team, and Model UN participant After graduating, he plans to go on a mission, and then he wants to design prosthetic limbs. He is still in the process of figuring out how to get there. Justin Conrad Eians Social Science Justin "Fuzz" Evans is passionate pas-sionate about the subjects in his category, and now as a Sterling Scholar, that passion has finally paid off. He said politics, economics, eco-nomics, and history are about all he talks of, and his interest started back in fifth grade in learning about the Constitution. Constitu-tion. Justin's future is well laid out He will go on an LDS mission, mis-sion, earn a business degree in economics from USU, and then a masters in finance to become a financial analyst He is excited to be in the Sterling Scholar program pro-gram with such amazing people and teachers. Parker Alton Huber General Scholarship Parker Huber said his Sterling Scholar nomination is a great honor, and he is both humbled and excited to be a part of this select group that has represented represent-ed UHS for many years. He feels that being well-rounded in all areas of school is important and has taken a variety of classes to help him decide his future field of study. Parker plans to leave on an LDS mission this fall and will attend BYU upon returning. return-ing. He is a drummer in the jazz band, a member of the percussion percus-sion ensemble, co-editor of the student literary magazine, and an active member of the drama program. Parker also participates partici-pates in Model UN, Envirothon, National Honor Society, and the math dub. , - . Imp 1 A Jessica Beth Waliis Foreign Language For Jessica Wallis, being nominated as a Sterling Scholar means that all her hard work in school has finally paid off. She started learning Latin just last year and said it has been easy for her to pick up because it is a lot like English. Jessica first heard of the Sterling Scholar program when she was in sixth grade and a teacher told her it would be nice to read about her winning as a senior. She would like to go into engineering or physics, but is still deciding where she wants to go to college. ' Mamta MuQibhai Chaudnari English Mamta Chaudhari always looked up to the Sterling Scholars Schol-ars and said she thinks her own nomination really, really cool. Her interest in English took off last year in AP English where she learned to love literature. Mamta enjoys finding the deeper meaning in poems, stories, and books. She is planning on going to college in the fall and has applied ap-plied to three different colleges in Utah. She is thinking about going into biology because she has been interested in it since taking AP biology last year. Mamta is involved in FBLA and Honor Society .. Brett Gregory Nieteon Visual Arts Brett Nielson aspired to be a Sterling Scholar for a long time, and so achieving that goal bat been a huge accomplishment for . him. He applied for several different dif-ferent categories, but won in hit favorite.
