Stan Wheeler teveral years back, Stan Wheeler was working on a routine welding job when suddenly sud-denly - BANG! A tremendous explosion blew Stan off his feet. "My watch flew off," remembers Stan, a Vietnam vet. "I never did find it. When my daughter heard the explosion, she ran out and took me to the hospital. I looked down and my left hand was gone. I thought I'd lost it. Then I felt a lump in the long sleeve of my shirt." Dr. Burk Young, a board-certified orthopedic ortho-pedic surgeon with Ashley Valley Medical Center, performed emergency surgery to reattach re-attach Stan's hand, using a six-hole plate, about five inches long and 12 inch wide, to stabilize the area. "It was a horrendous injury," recalls Dr. Young. "The radius of the bone had broken in two and the end of the bone was sticking out. Only tendons and some muscle tissue were keeping the hand attached." Today, Stan says his repaired left hand is in better shape than his right, which was uninjured unin-jured in the accident. ' According to Dr. Young, Ashley Valley offers a full spectrum of orthopedic services, from fracture repair and joint arthroscopy to sports injuries and joint replacement. "I think many people might be surprised C, at the level of expertise and care we provide," says Dr. Young. Stan agrees. "It's amazing what Medical Center Dr.Young and this hospital can do."
