"Big game permits in Utah are selling out faster and faster every year," said Judi Tutorow, wildlife licensing coordinator coordina-tor for the Division of Wildlife Resources. "If you know you want to hunt this year, don't wait to get your permit" Several big game permits are still available for this fall's hunts. The remaining permits may be purchased from the DWR's Web site (wildlife.utah. gov), more than 190 hunting license agents across the state and the DWR's six offices. As of Aug. 22 permits were still available for archery elk, spike bull and any bull elk permit, rifle and muzzleloader buck deer permits in some areas. If you'd rather hunt elk with a muzzleloader or a rifle, more than 8,900 spike bull elk permits per-mits and 10,700 any bull elk permits are still available. The general bull elk hunt begins Oct. 8. The Northern Region is the only region where muzzleloader muzzleload-er and rifle permits are still available for deer. As of Aug. 22 about 11,000 Northern Region permits were still available. " The general muzzleloader buck deer hunt begins Sept. 28, and the gneral rifle buck deer hunt begins Oct. 22. "Northern Region permits sold out three days before the hunt last year, and they're selling sell-ing at a faster pace this year," Tutorow said. "If you want to hunt buck deer in the region, get your permit as soon as possible." Fishing Report says it all: grab your gear and 'head out Best times to fish are the cooler hours. Techniques include trolling bottom structure using down riggers or steel line and flatfish, crank baits, or a flasher flash-er trailing a squid or small lure; or vertical jigging using tube or bucktail jigs with or without a minnow or sucker meat. There are many small and medium sized lake trout in Flaming Gorge, so please take advantage of the six fish lake trout regulation (one over 28 inches) and harvest a limit. Rainbow trout have moved into deeper water, making them more difficult to reach from shore. Boat fishermen are doing well at South Buckboard, Squaw Hollow, Anvil Draw, Linwood, Sheep Creek, Carter Creek, Jarvies and Mustang trolling small lures, a popgear and worm combo, or bait fishing fish-ing a nightcrawlermarsh-mallow nightcrawlermarsh-mallow combo or Powerbait just off the bottom. Kokanee salmon are moving deeper as well, with good reports from Pipeline to Holmes Crossing at 45-60 foot depths. Other good areas include Red Cliffs, Horseshoe Canyon, Gold Point and Sheep Creek. Try trolling a needlefish or small fluorescent spoon with or without a dodger dodg-er or flasher behind a down-rigger down-rigger or with lead core line. Smallmouth bass fishing is good however larger fish have moved into depths of 20 feet or more. Try crayfish colored grubs and jigs on gravel points, along vertical walls, and other rocky structures. GREEN RIVER (upper) Flows are averaging 1400 cfs with one daily fluctuation possible pos-sible between 870 and 1770 cfs as allowed by the 2000 Flow Recommendations for recovery of threatened and endangered downstream fish. The flows typically follow a pattern of increasing between 7 and 11 a.m., and dropping after 10 p.m. Visit the Bureau of Reclamation website www.uc.usbr.gov for the latest information. Large terrestrial patterns including hoppers, beetles and ants have been effective dry fly patterns, with occasional midge, mayfly may-fly and caddis hatches adding to the action, particularly on the downstream river reaches. Nymph fishing remains good with a variety of patterns, including olive, tan or pink scuds, size 10 16; bead head midge, size 16 22; and pheasant FREE SHOW WITH 4 rv 1 EVERT DINNER V ( X Our scenic restaurant is open open every weekend. New Zealand Mudsnail densities have dramatically increased in several localized areas near Little Hole, and have been documented doc-umented within several miles of the dam. Please thoroughly clean mud and vegetation from . waders, boats and fishing gear; and if possible, completely dry equipment before leaving the area. A hot water bath (120 degrees Fahrenheit) will kill mudsnails, and spraying equipment equip-ment with 409 or a similar soap solution before drying will increase effectiveness.
