Educat jon Choice Conf. to convene The Huntsman Administration Administra-tion will join administrations from six states at Snowbird's Cliff Lodge, August 11 and 12 to talk about expanding choice options in education. The Conference is hosted by the National Governor's Association's Center for Best Practices to encourage dialogue among education stakeholders regarding school choice policy. Those options include open enrollment within and among school districts, increased charter schools and tuition vouchers (tuition tax credits for Utah). All are hotly debated topics among education policy makers throughout the nation. One goal of the conference is to ensure that all students, especially espe-cially students in persistently low-performing schools, have many options for transferring to high-performing schools. Some states, like Florida, offer families a choice of schools with different programs, curricula, cur-ricula, and instructional techniques tech-niques to enable parents to St. James collects cans for international service program By Virginia Harrington Express Writer St. James Catholic Church in Vernal, under the direction of Father Protas, is involved in a continuing international and interdisciplinary faith effort to bring education and medicine medi-cine to the poorest people of Tanzania. Catholic and Protestant churches from the U.S., Germany, Holland, Italy and other European nations have combined their resources to provide dozens of schools and medical facilities across the mainland of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika) and on the island formerly known as Zanzibar. The local Catholic Church is part of that joint effort. at select a school that best meets their children's needs. In Utah, a private school tuition reimbursement reim-bursement program for special education students was recently recent-ly passed by the Legislature. "Empowering parents to take a more proactive role in the education of their children is vital to the long term success of our families and our state," said Tim Bridgewater, Utah Deputy of Education. "Exploring education edu-cation choice options will also carry the benefit of reducing class size from Utah's current cur-rent average of twenty-two. National research shows that lower class size, especially in the early grades has a significant signifi-cant improvement on student achievement." Governor Huntsman will also host an Education Summit on August 30, 2005, to discuss various education policies including funding and student achievement which has shown some troubling trends over the past ten years. St. James collects aluminum cans to raise its share of the money that goes toward health care in Tanzania. Parishioners and other residents of the Vernal area deposit their clean, used aluminum cans in a bin located on the south side of the Parish House which is just north of the church, located at 138 N. 100 W. in Vernal. The money provides medicines to Mawenjeni Dispensary in Rauya, Marangu Moshi, under the care of Father Francis Mallya of Rauya Parish. Father Protas said he is grateful for any donations made toward this effort and the church will willingly take cash donations in addition to the cans. Cans should be in bags and can be placed in the bin at any time. |
