Show .Vernal Express, Wednesday. June 29, 2005 All Most forest roads and campgrounds open for July 4 weekend Hatch supports hydrogen as energy source With the 4th of July weekend soon approaching, most major roads and campgrounds are open on the Ashley National Forest. The Forest continues contin-ues to get a lot of moisture, so dispersed campers are asked to avoid driving across wet areas where they may damage resources or get stuck. Most higher elevation areas are still inaccessible due to hundreds of downed trees, avalanche debris, snow pack, and landslides across roads and trails. Crews are working to clear roads and trails, but access is still very limited. All campgrounds, roads, and marinas are open on the Flaming Gorge Ranger District. Forest roads that are currently closed on the Vernal Ranger District are: Brownie Canyon (the section from Dry Fork to Charleys Park), however, the Red Cloud Loop Road from the east side is open to Charleys Park, Paradise Park (road crews are working on this road hoping to open the road to Tool Box Park by the weekend), the access road to Hacking Lake is closed from Big Park to Hacking Lake due to a blown out culvert; (the section from Trout Creek to Big Park is open). Forest roads currently closed on the Roosevelt Duchesne Ranger District are: Uinta Canyon road (above the Uinta Group Use Site), Hades Canyon (road to the Grandview Trailhead), and the Hells Canyon Road. Numerous secondary sec-ondary roads also remained impassable at higher elevations, eleva-tions, and road damage may be encountered on some open roads. On the Vernal Ranger District the Iron Springs Group Campground will be closed intermittently until June 30, due to hazardous tree removal. The Paradise Park campground is closed and the Oaks Park campground is open, but has no water. On the RooseveltDuchesne Ranger District closed campgrounds camp-grounds include: Avintaquin, Bridge, Pole Creek Lake, Riverview, Wandin, and Yellowstone. During the next few weeks, a 900 foot section of the Oaks Park Canal is planned for repair, due to damage from heavy runoff. The repairs will take place in the Davis Hollow area, located along the Alma Taylor road. Happy 4ftVii off Sen. Orrin G. Hatch, R-Utah, has joined U.S. Senate leaders in promoting hydrogen fuel cell technology incentives in the Senate energy bill. These provisions have the potential to move hydrogen-powered cars from the laboratory to the showroom. "We are 97 percent dependent depen-dent on oil in the nation's transportation trans-portation sector," Hatch said. "I don't like our nation being so dependent on a single energy source. If just 20 percent of cars used hydrogen technology, we could cut oil imports by 1.5 million mil-lion barrels a day. We need to take steps now to bring greater energy security in our future. Failure to do so is neglecting our responsibility to our country coun-try and its economy." Recently the Senate Finance Committee included Hatch's CLEAR ACT in the energy tax bill that is part of the Senate's comprehensive energy legislation. legisla-tion. The CLEAR ACT uses tax credits to promote consumer acceptance of alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles, vehi-cles, including those powered by hydrogen fuel cells. CLEAR ACT credits would also be offered for the installation of alternative fuel infrastructure and for the retail sale of alternative alter-native fuels. "There's no doubt about it incentives work," Hatch said. "Some areas, for example, allow owners of hybrid vehicles vehi-cles to ride in the high-occupancy-vehicle lanes, and sales of hybrid cars in those areas have skyrocketed. I intentionally intention-ally drafted the CLEAR ACT to provide the technologies and infrastructure improvements j; . 4 j i' ; t t i 1 I! r Senator Orrin Hatch necessary to bring us closer to a commercially available hydrogen cell vehicle." The Senate bill authorizes $3.7 billion over five years for hydrogen and fuel-cell research, as well as infrastructure to support sup-port hydrogen-powered cars. Provisions in the energy bill, particularly the CLEAR ACT, will help overcome the critical technology barriers in production, produc-tion, transportation, storage and use of hydrogen. The energy bill also includes several other Hatch provisions, provi-sions, including legislation that would increase the capacity of the nation's refineries, promote geothermal and other renewable renew-able fuels and develop energy from vast oil shale and tar sands resources located principally prin-cipally in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming.
