Show Out and About Kids Trips begin .Vernal Exoress Wednesday, May 25, Z005 HI Starting in June, the Uintah Recreation District will begin the Out and About Kids Trips. The Out and About Kids trips offer youth the opportunity to travel around the Uintah Basin and beyond to learn and experience experi-ence different things. The trips are for youth 5-12 years of age. Most trips will begin on Fridays at the Vernal Middle School at BASS to bring fishing fun to the area BASS's very successful Bass-aster Bass-aster CastingKids Competition Saturday, June 11 at 10 a.m. at Steinaker State Park is open for girls and boys in two age groups, 7-10 and 11-14. This free event for kids will be conducted con-ducted by the Uintah Basin Bassmasters. Bassmaster CastingKids tests the basics of fishing flipping, pitching and casting and don't worry if you or your child has never fished before, instructors instruc-tors will be on site to help your child. The contest begins here at the local level where each child aims for a target. Scoring will be based on a system where the highest points determine the winner from each of the two age groups. From there, the winners from each local competition will advance to their respective state competitions and then on to a national competition. Only ten semifinalists will earn the right to attend the CITGO Bassmaster Classic and compete in the National Bassmaster Championship. In addition, over $20,000 will be up for grabs. , "Bassmaster CastingKids is a great event that focuses on a terrific sport and its future," commented Uintah Basin Bassmaster's Chapter President Ted Gardner. A parent or guardian must accompany the child for the competition;, , J ' about 9 a.m. and return around 3 p.m. Lunches are provided. This year's trips will be kicked off with a trip to the famous Utah Hogle Zoo. The registration fee is $20 per person. per-son. This fee includes a ticket to ride on the train at the zoo. The summer trips also include behind the scenes of the "Fiddler on the Roof," Steinaker Lake, Jones Hole and the Roosevelt outdoor pool. Parents are also welcome to register for these trips. Sometime on the weekend of May 14 and 15, numerous sage grouse were shot and left on a lek on the Diamond Mountain Plateau. Leks are areas where male grouse traditionally strut to attract females and breed. In the days following the original orig-inal incident, additional grouse and a raven were shot and left. If anyone has information regarding this or other wildlife crimes, they are encouraged to report this information by calling the help-stop-poaching hotline at (800) 662-DEER, or by contacting Conservation Officer Randall Scheetz at (435) 790-1070.
