Weston Deets Lady Utes finish seventh at state track At the 3A State Track meet Friday and Saturday Uintah had its good and bad moments. Having thrown the javelin 161 feet 1 1 inches just weeks prior. Gray Augustus fell a little short of his mark at 150 feet, but it was enough to get him a sixth place position at the state meet held at the BYU track in Provo. Coach Shane Lance, before the meet, predicted that Augustus would finish fin-ish in the top six, but he had hoped it would have been at the top of the six. The girls medley relay team of Maggie Battel, Kelsey Peltier, Alise Watkins and Whitney Fleetwood, took first by beating the prior school record with a time of 4:17.50. Their old record was 4:21.27, which was also a sch(K)l record. Lance said the relay team members all perform with a lot of heart, but Band's performance was inspiring. "When she was handed the baton on the last leg of the event, she was in fifth place," Lance said. "She battled back to pass two runners and catch up and pass the last three runners in the last curve of the event. She left everyone in the dust and poured her heart out." Bartel performed in the relay came shortly after running her single 800 event. In the 300 hurdles Peltier took seventh and Bartel took fifth. In the mile, Bartel took first. Overall, the Uintah High School Girls took seventh sev-enth place at state. In the pole vault, Skyler Massey took first with a height of 14 feet. "Just before leaving for the State Meet he pole vaulted twice at 15 feet 6 inches," Lance said. Before leaving, he switched to a bigger pole which he wasn't used to. In the 4x1 relay, the boys took seventh. Jason Mathis high jumped for 5 feet 8 inches. His highest jump this season was 5 feet 8 inches. Bartel and Massey were invited to represent Utah June 4 and 5 at the .rCA IvA - Uintah's Baseball team defended its home plate in bullish fashion against Lehi Thursday afternoon, but an infield home run decided the game. Both Uintah and Lehi scored one run in the first inning. Danny Hatch pitched the game and kept Lehi batters bat-ters at bay for much of the game. In the third inning, with the bases loaded, a Uintah runner was called out at home plate when it appeared that the Lehi catcher didn't tag the runner, and he was clearly off the plate. The call caused a conference between Coach Brent Labium and the home plate umpire. In the fifth, Ute catcher, Dustin Sabin, stopped a Lehi score when Joe Lawson, left field, made a perfect per-fect throw to home plate. The runner run-ner attempted to mow over the feisty catcher, but Sabin held his ground and more importantly, he held onto the ball to clinch the out. In the sixth inning, Uintah was hanging onto a one point lead 4-3, when a Lehi batter hit an infield home run over the center fielder's head. Three runs were scored and the Utes were unable to make up the deficit. The final score was 6-4, which took the boys out of the state tournament. yjjmfaalfr) Uintah hung onto a one-run lead until late in Thursday's state tournament tour-nament game only to have the lead taken away by errors and a hot innning at bat for the Lehi Pioneers. Uintah's only score came in the first inning when Lexi White singled sin-gled and was brought in home by a double from Jessica Wiseman. Good pitching from Tiffany Parker and sharp infield plays from Krissy Hacking, third; Kelsi Robb, short stop, Ramy Piva on second, took the short game away from Lehi. "Before the game I told Krissy she had to step up and watch for the bunts and short hits which Lehi is known for," Cloward said. Also, Parker became frustrated by what appeared to be a change in the strike zone, causing several walks. After Coach Tony Cloward had a talk with the umpire behind the plate and used a time out to regroup the Utes, the team was able to finish out the inning. With the bases loaded in the seventh, sev-enth, Uintah couldn't get a runner run-ner across home plate. Uintah lost 1-3, forcing it into another game, immediately after the loss, against Grantsville. Uintah lost to Grantville 1-6. Parker pitched the second game and the Utes held Grantsville to 1-1 through the thid inning. "It was a hard-fought game," Cloward said. "We came up short when it came to big game experience, experi-ence, but next year we will be the team to beat," Cloward said. The Grantsville loss put the Utes out of the state tournament.
