The event began with Director Joseph Shaffer and radio station KXRQ getting the walk off to an exciting start. TriCounty Health had the opportunity oppor-tunity of having help from Karen Coats and Jennie Southwick of the Utah Health Department and the Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program. Coats helped to motivate the participants and recruit more of the public to get involved. According to Public Information Officer Toni Bolton, the purpose of the Gold Medal Mile Walk is to encourage members of the community commu-nity to get out of their houses and be active, as well as to prove that "anyone can walk a mile." Over 150 participants walked around the beautiful Freestone Legacy Walking Park to get into the OOP FREE ADMISSION FOR EVERYONE OF ALL AGES! TriCounty Health Department promotes safe and healthy lifestyles. Three laps around the park, which equals one mile, was definitely a refreshing refresh-ing way to start the participants' new healthy lifestyles. Some decided decid-ed to jog around the park while others oth-ers decided to enjoy the nice evening eve-ning with a brisk walk. The course was decorated with many balloons, donated by Vernal Floral. As participants finished their walks there were oranges and water waiting for them, donated by Allan Mashburn Baker Petrolite, Davis Jubilee, K-Mart, Smith's and Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola. Incentives such as Olympic gold medal pins, pedometers and many other great prizes were given. TriCounty Health Department recognizes those who volunteered and the many participants, both young and old, who supported the event.
