Show Army medic "Anywhere the infantrv eoes an f Army medic goes," says Kyle P. Eisenbraun. Being a medic wasn't the way he had envisioned himself as a child playing war games with G.I. Joe, The reality of war is a front row seat for Spc. Kyle P. Eisnbraun, combat medic attached to 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. He is assigned halfway between Tikrit and Kirkuk in Bayji. Eisenbraun was profiled recently in the Walter Reed Medical Center Stripe newspaper. Eisenbraun was recovering at Walter Reed from leishmaniasis at the time. Leishmaniasis is an infection developed devel-oped from the bite of sand fleas. In his interview by Stripe staff writer Jack L. Gillund, the former computer company employee says "Any time the infantry is going into a situation where they could take hostile fire or they could make contact, con-tact, they're supposed to have a medic. "My primary mission, should we come into contact with the enemy, is to treat any injuries that we receive." Preparations help families survive emergencies By Maureen Spencer Express Writer None of the Salt Lake County residents res-idents who spent several days without with-out electrical service following the heavy Christmas Eve snowfall, anticipated that theirs would be homes living at near pioneer-level conditions in the middle of the winter. win-ter. Likewise, it is impossible to anticipate antic-ipate all of the disasters, natural and man-made, that could seriously disrupt dis-rupt life and safety necessitating some basic preparations to endure modest circumstances in as healthy a manner as possible. In Utah, the 72-hour survival kit has reached near mythical proportions, propor-tions, but its concept remains valid -for all citizens to maintain health ' and comfort during the more probable proba-ble circumstances requiring a kit. Many have found the benefit in the harsh winter months for drivers to have a small food and water stash in their vehicles, along with warm blankets and clothing. Researchers suggest the following be considered by individuals to be kept in their homes for unexpected inconveniences for a 72-houi period. peri-od. Package each meal for each member in individual bags. Pick foods your family will enjoy. Rotate your food by expiration dates, using the old as it is replaced by the new. Place food in your kits that are easy to prepare or ready to eat. When you need to use this kit, remember you will have in most cases been evacuated from your home either by car or on foot. It will be a stressful time for your family. You may be in a Red Cross Shelter, in a campground or on the road or on the way to relatives homes. You will not have all the luxuries of home. Don't spend a lot of money. Experienced "survivors" suggest the following ideas for food: beef jerky, saltine crackers, corned beef hash, soup-for-one, roast beef hash, cheese and crackers, beef stew, oyster oys-ter crackers, chili, dried beef, ravioli, ravio-li, fruit cups, applesauce cups, Vienna sausages, pudding cups, bread sticks, cookies, snack pack cereal, canned milk, powdered milk, fruit rolls, fun fruits, packages of raisins, packages of peanuts, gra-nola gra-nola bars, beef sticks, boxed juices, hot cocoa mix, suckers, hard candy, trail mix and power bars. Emergency fuel such as canned heat (Sterno), can be purchased at most sporting good or grocery License office extends hours The Utah State Department of Public Safety Driver License Division will now be open five days a week, Monday through Friday. Office hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except holidays, and will be closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. Clients need appear no later than one hour before closing. experiencing Should his patrol pick up any detainees (enemy prisoners of war) he is also responsible for treating their injuries until the ambulance or evacuation can arrive. While the 42 infantry soldiers in his platoon are on foot patrol, there may be several Bradleys operating in the same area. If a Bradley crew member is injured Eisenbraun is responsible for his care as well. He feels his first time that he treated a serious casualty in the field was probably his worst time. While on patrol with his squad, Eisenbraun says a Bradley in the area ran over a land mine and damage dam-age was severe. He says of the seriously seri-ously injured driver, "He was sitting right on top of where the land mine went off. Waiting for the ambulance to arrive to evacuate him seemed like a day." All told, on ground it was about an hour. He sees a wide variety of injuries besides gunshot wounds, and says he's treated approximately 100 war related injuries since signing on as a medic for Uncle Sam. Being sent to Iraq was a scary prospect for the young soldier. "All stores. It is suggested to store one large can per person per day. If the family is used to using other types of heating and has the equipment, by all means use them. A two-battery flashlight can continuously con-tinuously run for about 7 hours. Candles and matches in watertight containers may be more readily needed. It is important that you take a comprehensive survey of your own family units needs and insure that you have included any special items that are unique to you. Your needs could be very much different than the suggested lists. Once you have established and gathered together what you feel are necessary requirements for both an Emergency Preparedness Kit and a substantial , First Aid Kit," find, a water-tight storage box. Civil Defense bulletins remind that water should be stored before it is needed, when it may be too late to act before contamination or interruption inter-ruption of the supply. Be cautious about using rain water and snow, which should be treated the same as any other unknown water source due to particulates par-ticulates and acids. Be prepared to boil water for consumption. It is suggested that each member of your household have a minimum of 1.5 gallons of water per day. This is including infants (nursing mothers will need more). It is suggested sug-gested then, that you store 4.5 gallons gal-lons per member of your family for your 72 hour supply. For proper sewage disposal you will need disposable containers (for example, brown paper bags or plastic plas-tic bags) ,spray disinfectant .newspapers .news-papers and toilet tissue, insecticide and a pointed shovel. A battery- powered radio with local stations and the emergency broadcast system would be the only source of reliable information during dur-ing an emergency. Check batteries regularly. Family records and valuables such as birth certificates, naturalization naturaliza-tion papers, diplomas, insurance certificates, computer disks, passports, pass-ports, etc. should be available for a quick "evacuation grab." Lightweight stress management items for young and old are invaluable. invalu-able. Items that are emotionally reassuring should be included in the emergency kit. These can include crayons, coloring books, story books, puzzles, soft small toys for children. Personal items for adults should be included such as books, handiwork, musical instrument, or sports equipment. Plastic bags and ties are items that can serve as garbage containers, contain-ers, ground cloths, tents, wash basins, broken window covers and substitute rain coat. Paper cups, plates, bowls and disposable utensils uten-sils will help you to conserve water and at the same time minimize contamination con-tamination prohjems. Additional items to consider are paper towels, soap, feminine hygiene needs, disposable diapers (adult or infant, as needed), medications medica-tions for three days for each member mem-ber of the family and toiletries. Comfortable sleeping equipment should be included. Wool blankets resist fire and they warm even when wet. They are also less bulky than sleeping bags. Don't forget to pack a can opener and a sharp, versatile knife will come in handy. An adjustable wrench helps with gas and water lines. All responsible family members should be trained to turn off gas or water lines to prevent home damage, dam-age, but to increase pressure for community use. A small ax and heavy gloves are useful. A few "dry runs" to see who can carry how much of what items would be helpful to refine the 72-hour 72-hour kit concept. Children need to be well-trained in the responsibilities responsibili-ties involved in advance, and adults benefit from the evaluation process as well. More than 20 per cent of high school students report that they smoked a cigarette before age 13. The studies, reported in the publication publi-cation "Raising kids who don't smoke" distributed by the Philip Morris USA Youth Smoking Prevention company, suggest that elementary school is not too early to talk to a child about not smoking. It is not too early to develop an ongoing conversation. If the child is 15 and doesn't smoke, the discussions shouldn't stop-there is still risk. If a teen can be prevented from smoking in high school, chances are greater that they won't smoke as adults. More than one-third of all kids who try smoking go on to smoke daily. And approximately 80 per cent of adult smokers started before they turned 18. Even though smoking numbers are down, studies show that in 2002 nearly 1 1 per cent of eighth graders, nearly 18 per cent of 10th graders and 27 per cent of 12th graders had smoked a cigarette in the past 30 days. The public health community gives important points on youth addiction. The younger people are when they start smoking, the more likely they are to become strongly addicted addict-ed to nicotine. The short-term effects in teens and preteens who smoke are their increased susceptibility to colds and their experiencing shortness of breath more often than those who don't. Long-term effects are seen by more Americans dying from cigarette-related illnesses than alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide homi-cide and illegal drugs combined. Increase fiber intake slowly To be successful in adding fiber to the diet, make slow, small changes rather than quick ones in your eating eat-ing habits, caution nutritionists who encourage increasing fiber to the average American diet to combat a number of health problems. If the higher fiber beans are to be added to the menu, the amount of beans eaten should increase slowly. Give yourself about three to four weeks for the body to adjust to the higher bean intake. Another way to help yourself is by soaking beans in hot water before cooking and then draining the soak water. This reduces the gas forming sugars sug-ars found in beans without losing large amounts of important nutri ents.
