UBAOG honors senior volunteers Gardiner returns from Brazil mission Greg Gardiner, son of Lee and Pam Gardiner, returned on Aug. 4 from the Sao Paulo Brazil East mission mis-sion for the LDS Church. He will report his two-year mission mis-sion August 13.12:45 p.m.at the Vernal Second Ward, 235 E. 600 S. Correction to page 18 Uintah Basin Association of Governments (UBAOG) honored the senior volunteers who are in the Foster Grandparent Program on July 27. Seventeen of the 22 volunteers attended a barbeque at the home of Diane Jenson, the AAA director at UBAOG, in Pleasant Valley. The volunteers were given a T-shirt and certificate for their outstanding dedication ded-ication to volunteering or serving the critical needs of children and youth in the Uintah Basin. They are pleased to have volunteers' of high quality working with the youth of the basin. The children these volunteers volun-teers have worked with have improved in reading, math and social skills. The staff of UBAOG, the teachers, parents and students the volunteers work with want to thank these wonderful seniors for their time and love. The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is a national program for senior citizens 60 and over to volunteer volun-teer and use their talents, skills and life experiences in helping children and youth have a better chance in life. The FGP has been around since 1965. Today, nearly 24,000 older Americans volunteer as Foster Grandparents in the United States. They give care and attention every day to more than 80,000 children and youth with exceptional needs. In improving the lives of the children they serve, Foster Grandparents also profoundly enrich their own lives. To quote one of the local volunteers. Shirley Bayer, "The children give me so much more than I can give them. This experience has given me something to live for each day." The heart of the program is the one-on-one daily attention that foster grandparents grand-parents provide. This special care helps young people grow, gain confidence, con-fidence, and become more full and productive members of society. The benefits to individuals and communities commu-nities are both immediate and lasting. last-ing. Foster Grandparents volunteers are recruited by FGP. There will be two events on Saturday. A picnic will be held from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the park by the swimming pool and a banquet will be held that evening at 5:30 p.m. at the Crack 'd Pot. There are nine FGP volunteer stations in the Uintah Basin at this time. They are: Ashley Valley High School, Ashley Elementary. Duchesne Elementary. East Elementary, Lapoint Elementary, Naples Elementary. Neola Elementary, Todd Elementary, and Altamont Elementary. If you are at least 60 years of age. meet certain income eligibility requirements, love children, and are willing to volunteer at least 20 hours a week, you can apply to become a Foster Grandparent. Foster Grandparents receive a small, tax-free tax-free stipend to cover the cost of serving. They also receive transportation trans-portation assistance, meals while on duty and supplemental accident and liability coverage while they are serving.
