Ed Rowley's High Valley Notes There were many makes of automobiles fifty years ago. But some names were different. In addition to ever-present Ford. GM and Chrysler brands, one might see a Kaiser, Nash or Studebaker. Or a Hudson or Packard, along with a civilian version of the military jeep. Jeep wasn't capitalized until it became a registered trademark. Seat belts were rare and many vehicles had no signal lights. It was common to see dri vers roll down windows and give arm signals. Large trucks and school busses had driver-operated mechanical signal arms. Air conditioning was rare, but some cars had window-mount evaporative coolers. Body bolts and rivets often came loose, provoking the name, "rattletrap." They don't make 'em like they used to. Thank goodness. 2000 Ed Rowley Denver region finishes Census 2000 count The 10-state Denver Region is the first of 12 regions in the nation to conclude Non-Response Follow-up, the largest portion of Census 2000 operations. Non-Response Follow-up is the procedure in which census takers knock on the doors of households that did not return their questionnaires question-naires by mail. Approximately 40.000 employees throughout the region were hired to complete this task. The Denver Region includes Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. Nearly 3 million households were contacted up to six times each in order to obtain as much questionnaire question-naire information as possible for this once in a decade event "We want to acknowledge the tremendous effort made by all the staff in our 38 Local Census Offices in order to complete this massive task," said Susan A. Lavin, director of the Denver Region. 'The success in the Denver Region resulted from a combination of factors, fac-tors, including the preliminary efforts of our staff and partners to increase awareness about the Census and the hard work and dedication dedi-cation of our entire operations staff including the enumerators knocking on doors." The operation began April 27, and the last of the region's 38 offices completed their work on June 10, several weeks ahead of schedule. Nationally, the Non-Response Follow-up completion is at 99.74 percent. The Atlanta and Los Angeles regions completed the process this week, and the remaining remain-ing seven regions are close to being finished. Census employees are processing completed questionnaires at a Data Capture Center in Pomona, Calif. The Bureau is now preparing for several quality control checks this summer, and the first census data will be issued to the President on or before December 31, 2000. There's NO excuse for abuse. Generations of Uintah County families have believed so strongly in these freedoms that their grandfathers, fathers and sons have bravely stood up for this great country and defended those freedoms in combat. Over 125 of Uintah County's brave young men have paid the ultimate price and their families suffered the ultimate sacrifice. One hundred and twenty-five (125) young men never returned to Uintah County, to the homes and families for whom they fought to defend. One hundred and twenty-five (125) young lives lost in defense of Americas freedoms. American freedoms: Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness.. .the pursuit of the American dream, the liberty to own and keep private property. Now Commissioner Herb Snyder, through the abuse of condemnation is forcing Ray Hunting off his own property, taking away part of his dream, a dream he willingly will-ingly served his country in Korea to defend. Dont allow Uintah County to diminish the sacrifice of our brave young soldiers. On June 27, you have an opportunity to protect our freedoms by voting for Sharon Bedell for Uintah County Commissioner.
