J ' a , Whiterocks fire burns east of the town. Roads are blocked off in Whiterocks while firefighters prepare to deal with fire. There ought to be a law Whiterocks fire destroys buildings, acreage Strong northeastern winds contributed con-tributed to a fire that destroyed five buildings and scorched 950 acres before it was contained Tuesday. Incident information officer on the fire, Walt Sixkiller, said the fire should be under control Tuesday evening and mop-up will continue through the week. The fire started at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The cause is under investigation, but it is suspected that it was caused by children playing play-ing with matches. Initially the fire covered 300 acres and traveling east from Whiterocks burning sage brush, cotton wood trees and wil lows. Initial response was to keep the fire away from structures, the Whiterocks Cemetery, and historical histori-cal sites and for the safety of the residents and fire crews. Sunday fire retardant was dropped on the fire from a plane based at Grand Junction, Colo. From the anchor point of the fire retardant, 154 fire fighters, including includ-ing a helicopter with a bucket, a tanker and pumpers began the fire containment The crews included a hot shot unit, the Flamingos. Before it could be contained, the fire destroyed a two-story home.
