Show Over 1 70 particpate in free day Over 170 people took advantage -of the free day at the Uintah County Landfill, Nov. 1, reported landfill supervisor Doug Slaugh, Tuesday. ' Slaugh said that 52 people Saturday didn't understand that the free day was only for yard and garden gar-den waste. He said people tried to sneak in refrigerators, used oil and other items that require a fee. Slaugh said the landfill cannot accept ac-cept a refrigerator until the Freon has been removed. Oil can be deposited de-posited at the recycling area at no charge. Slaugh said that for every 55 gallon gal-lon drum of oil deposted at the landfill, the state will give a free pair of leather gloves. "Our oil recycling system is the best in the state," Slaugh said. "Where we have not gown up with all these rules, it is hard not to sort items coming into the landfill," said Commissioner Lewis Vincent. "I would invite anyone in the county to go out and have a look at the landfill and see the differences that have been made," said Commissioner Herb Snyder. It is time for families, parent groups, agencies and other child advocates to educate edu-cate the public about all the children chil-dren who are waiting for adoption. In Utah there are approximately 2,900 children who are in foster care and 300 children have a goal of adoption. Approximately 500 children were adopted in Utah last year. On Saturday, Nov. 8, 1997 from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. the Utah Adoption Council, in cooperation with the Utah Museum of Natural History, is celebrating Utah's adoptive children chil-dren and their families. Adopted children, adoptive families, birth parents, and children who are waiting wait-ing for a permanent adoptive home, will all be honored during a day of fun and exploration. The Celebration will begin at 3 p.m. with craft making and interactive exhibits for the whole family. Roma Downey of Touched By An Angel will arrive at 4 p.m. and will be reading stories in the Story Corner from 4 p.m until 5 p.m. At 5 p.m. Lieutenant Governor Olcne Walker will read the proclamation declaring declar-ing that November is Adoption Awareness Month in Utah. Awards will be presented to those who have made significant contributions to adoption in the past year. There will be a short program followed by socializing so-cializing in the Dinosaur Room. This Dino-Mite Celebration will begin the various festivities of Adoption Agencies throughout Utah to highlight National Adoption Awareness Month. The statistics show that 20 percent of all Americans are directly associated with adoption through themselves or family relationships. One in every ev-ery 50 Americans is adopted. These figures show dramatically how prevalent adoption is in the United States. As wonderful as these figures fig-ures look, there are many children who continue to wait for adoption. In the past thirty years the adoption process has changed dramatically. A family does not have to be wealthy to adopt. The waiting time for some adoptions can be under one year. There are many children waiting for someone they can call Mom and Dad. These kids are as varied as the families who are looking look-ing to adopt a child. We urge anyone any-one whom is interested in adoption to join our Celebration at the Utah Museum of Natural History. The Utah Adoption Council is a consortium of adoption agencies, adoptive parents, birth parents, those who were adopted, and lawyers in the State of Utah.
