Hunters afield for the opening of Utah's archery deer hunt Aug. 23 will be the first of the state's deer hunters to see how the deer herd recovery re-covery from the winter of 1992-93 is progressing. Depending on the region of the state hunted, hunters should be pleased. "Last year's fawn crop is the best we've seen in the last seven or eight years, which makes for a lot of yearling bucks," said Mike Welch, big game program coordinator coordi-nator for the Division of Wildlife Resources. Except for a couple of isolated areas, ar-eas, Welch said deer came through this winter in good shape. Deer numbers on most of the Northeastern Region units are up a little from last year, with hunters expected to find success similar to last year's, said Steve Cranney, Northeastern Region wildlife program pro-gram manager. An exception is the Current CreekRed Creek area, (an area from Strawberry Valley east through Duchesne), where there was some winter fawn loss. "The number of yearling bucks will be down in these areas," Cranney said. If you're a hunter fortunate enough to draw a permit for the Diamond Mountain limited entry unit, Cranney says to get ready -you may come across some big iucks. "We have a really nice buck deer population developing there," Cranney said. "The Diamond Mountain population is providing a great hunting opportunity for those who draw a permit for it, and a great wildlife viewing opportunity, too." Cranney said weather conditions have been dry through most of the summer, but the region has received re-ceived a lot of precipitation recent-ly. recent-ly. "More precipitation received in late summer or early fall could disperse dis-perse animals during the archery hunt," Cranney said. Two reminders for those hunting the region this yean In effort to help deer herds in the Book Cliffs recover, the Book Cliffs unit remains closed to hunting. hunt-ing. A substantial amount of land in the Uintah Basin is Ute tribal land and is not open to public hunting. Hunters are encouraged to obtain maps, available from Division offices, of-fices, to learn Ute tribal land boundaries.
