UHS A cappella Choir and HiLites present concert The Uintah high School choral department, under the direction of Reed M. Hansen, is planning a choir concert Wednesday, Nov. 13. The A cappella Choir and the Uintah HiLites, accompanied by Carla J. Cleavinger, will perform a variety of classical, Latin, contemporary, contem-porary, popular and unaccompanied numbers that evening. The concert is scheduled in the Uintah High School auditorium, beginning be-ginning at 7 p.m., and is free to the public. The 80-member A cappella Choir has been rehearsing since August. This will be their first concert. The group generally performs fall, winter win-ter and spring concerts throughout the year. They have already been asked to participate in the Cedar City Choral Invitational, and will travel there in the spring. The A cappella Choir also participated in Large Choir Festival, a regional competition. Individual choir members mem-bers are eligible to participate in region re-gion and state solo and ensemble competitions. The Uintah HiLites, a 26-member show choir, performs many styles of music throughout the school year. They also join with the A cappella cap-pella Choir for concerts, competitions competi-tions and festivals. Twelve members of the Uintah HiLites participated in UMEA All State Choir in October in Salt Lake City. The students were selected in May 1996 for the Oct. 12 performance. perfor-mance. They rehearsed locally as a group, spending many evenings and extra hours preparing for the event, memorizing all the music. The 12 students traveled to Price twice for regional rehearsals, where they were required to pass off all seven songs from memory. Members of the All State Choir spent two days rehearsing with the 750-mcmbcr group in Salt Lake City under the direction of Dr. Will Kcsling. They performed in the LDS Tabernacle on Temple Square, in conjunction with the All State Orchestra and All State Band. Over 1,000 outstanding musicians from throughout Utah performed in the Grand Festival Concert for an audience audi-ence that filled the building. The choir performed many styles of music, some with instrumental accompaniment including french horn and conga drum. The final piece, "America the Beautiful," arranged ar-ranged by director Will Kesling, was combined with the All State Band for a conclusion to the program. pro-gram. The All State Choir participants from Uintah High School were: Vanessa Angulo, T. Kenny Caldwell, Angela Hales, Molly Hanberg, Jay Haslem, Cydne Hawkins, Dana McKeachnie, Stefni Jo Ross, Wes Weber, Cheya Wheeler, Angels Wilding and Ben Wood. The entire Uintah HiLites group has been invited to participate in the Emery Honor Choir, directed by Carl Ashby, a well-known and respected re-spected choral teacher, adjudicator and clinician. They will combine with other select choirs from Utah, performing an evening of music for the Honor Band and Choir Concert at Emery High School Nov. 6. The students who will participate in the Honor Choir Concert are: Debra Anderson, Vanessa Angulo, Jackie Anthon, Carrie Barlow, Keith Batty, Andrew Bentley, Tim Caldwell, Barry Ewell, Marissa Hacking, Angela Hales, Molly Hanberg, Jay Haslem, Cydne Hawkins, Michael Jackson, Dana McKeachnie, Jeremiah O' Crowley, Trent Richens, Amy Richins, Stefni Jo Ross, Joshua Sorenson, Nicholas Weber, Wesley Weber, Cheya Wheeler, Chip Whitmire, Angela Wilding and Benjamin Wood. The Uintah HiLites are preparing a Christmas program, and have been invited to perform in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building as part of the Temple Square Christmas Concert Series in December. The group will be available avail-able to perform locally in December at church, community and club parties, and school assemblies. assem-blies. ' r Josh Smuin Smuin completes Eagle Scout Josh Smuin, son of Curtis and Tracie Smuin, complete his Eagle Scout project requirements in August. Smuin planned, organized and provided leadership to eight other scouts and three adults who assisted hjm in completing three-eighths of a mile of fence to control livestock on public lands. This project is located lo-cated near the radio tower at the head of Chipeta Canyon in the Book Cliffs. This project will help control livestock on public lands. Smuin is a member of Scout Troop 544 under the direction of Scoutmaster Max Young. Paul Buhler served as the BLM project coordinator. Scouts offering Smuin assistance with his project included Clint Young, Aaron Young, Garrett Smuin, Jesse Walton, Richard Buhler and two boys from youth corrections. Adult leadership assisting assist-ing with the project included Dale Smuin and Max Young. Dinah Dancers Ghosts and goblins were in attendance atten-dance Wednesday night, Oct. 30 at the Dinah Dancers annual Halloween party. Winners of the costume contest and pumpkin carving were: Shanty Nelson and Anita "Sam" Haws, costumes; Boyd and Arva Redden, Liz Wamsley and Bill Thomson, pumpkins. The door prize was presented to Floyd and Jean Cox, presidents, and refreshments were served.
