Prior to the championship game, the Lady Utes played pretty lough themselves. The girls opened tournament tour-nament play Thursday with a 7-2 victory over Carbon. Jensen pitched a four hitter while her teammates pounded out 11 hits. Liz Cranney was perfect at the plate with two hits and two walks. The girls took on region 11 champion cham-pion Emery Thursday afternoon in their second game and cruised to a 9-1 victory. Again Jensen pitched a four hitter. The Lady Utes were clinging to a tenuous 3-1 lead heading head-ing into the sixth inning when Cranney opened the stanza with a triple. The team went on to score six runs including a towering blast from left fielder Missy Dimick over the center field wall. The two victories set up the first showdown with Union. The Basin rivals were the last two undefeated teams and played like it. Union scored five runs in the third inning to take a seemingly commanding lead. But the Lady Utes rallied behind be-hind a bases loaded triple from Cranney and several other clutch hits to score seven runs in the fourth. The girls scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth after Union had tied it up at seven all when Dimick tripled and scored on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Jensen. After the emotional victory, Uintah took on North Sanpete Friday afternoon about one hour after af-ter the Union game. "We were definitely defi-nitely a little flat for that game," Hawkins stated. "It (the Union game) was such an emotion filled contest, I don't think any of us had much left for North Sanpete. Plus they were motivated by the fact they had already lost one game. Another loss would have knocked them out completely." With Coach Hawkins shuffling players left and right, the team dropped their first game 10-5. Since Uintah was the last team to lose, they received the bye Saturday into the championship. r "A Missy Dimick holds up ball for time after recording second out in final inning of semi-final 8-7 victory over Lady Cougars. g' VA ' ;' ' A ' y .
