Show 20 Venial Express Wednesday, September 15, 1993 Volleyball team gains irespectt at UJtie tournament Cm--- by Eric Pye Sports Writer Nothing like a tight, hard fought victory over your cross-Basin rival to boost the confidence level of your team, which is what head Coach Dorris Salazar must have been thinking after her team defeated defeat-ed Region 10 foe Lehi in straight games last Thursday at the Ute lair. ' The Lady Ute 15-12, 15-8 decision deci-sion gave them a 2-0 region mark and 2-1 overall, but more importantly impor-tantly the victories have given the team a shot of confidence which was evidenced by their inspired play the first night of their own tournament Friday. Competing in a field comprised of 5A Kearns, 5A Brighton and state ranked Emery and Carbon, the Lady Utes completed an incredible sweep of all the teams in round robin play to go undefeated and earn the number num-ber one seed for the double elimination elimina-tion play Saturday. When asked what she attributed her team's play to, Coach Salazar quickly responded, "team play. These girls have learned the importance impor-tance of working together, plus they realize we have no superstar on the team. That means everyone must pull their own weight and maybe a little of their teammates too!" Coach Salazar explained the team has been working on power dinks, fake spiking and back row spiking and was able to use them in the tournament and region contests. "Brandi Stailey is our best spiker and calls the plays, along with Sarah Cranney. She understands the game and is very aggressive and was also named team captain by her teammates. She leads by example." The Lady Utes defeated Kearns 16-14, Carbon 20-12, Brighton 20-3 and Emery 16-1 1 in the round robin and seemed poised for the championship. champi-onship. But the girls have a few more lessons to learn before attaining attain-ing such heights. Saturday, after drawing a first round bye, the Lady Utes faced a ranked 3A Carbon in their first game, pulling out a tough 13-15, 15-8, 15-11 decision. Next up was another ranked team Emery. After dropping a 15-10 first game, the girls came back with a vengeance, spanking the Lady Spartans 15-3 to force a third game. Uintah seemed to have the match, leading 14-10 with service, but the girls learned a good lesson in the process of dropping a 16-14 loss. "We had three rotations of service net their serves," Salazar said, "in volleyball that is a critical mistake because the other team doesn't have to do anything to regain the serve, and we did it three times in a row. I think the kids thought they had the contest won and lost their focus and competitive intensity." The team took on Kearns in the consolation and dropped a lackluster lacklus-ter 4-15, 10-15 match to finish third in the tournament. "You could see the kids were still hurting from the Emery match and never really collected col-lected themselves for Kearns, Salazar explained. "In a way, it was good to have this happen now because tournaments are totally different dif-ferent than regular games and we needed this to get ready for region and state competition." Overall, Coach Salazar stated she is very proud of the team and believes they will bounce back. The team takes on prc-season number one Wasatch Thursday at Wasatch. The team might be short handed if Misty Critton can not go Thursday after sustaining a sprained ankle in the last game against Kearns. "Although they are a step above us now, it is the kind of competition com-petition we need to play against in order to improve." Despite losing all three of their matches, the young Lady Utes nearly near-ly pulled the upset in two of those matches. The first came against Weber. Both doubles teams took straight set victories, but all three singles players play-ers dropped their matches to lose 2-3. 2-3. The team ran into Lehi in the second sec-ond round and fell 1-4. The lone victory coming at number two singles sin-gles where Coach Enloe had Tiffany Bullock playing. Bullock pulled out a 4-6, 64, 6-4 win in Coach Enloe's jumbled lineup. Despite dropping the 1-4 decision, Coach Enloe was upbeat "We competed better this time around. Both doubles teams almost al-most pulled out victories. The tough matches are definitely making us better." The teams' third and final match came against host Pineview. Again the team dropped a close 2-3 decision. deci-sion. Wilckens and Mott dropped close matches while both doubles teams won. Tiffany Vincent was locked into her typical 3 set war, winning the first set 6-4, dropping the second 4-6 and finally succumbing succumb-ing 3-6 in the third. The Lady Utes host Park City today to-day (Wednesday) and conclude their region competition Friday when they host Lehi. The Region 10 tournament tour-nament is this Saturday at Uintah with competition slated to begin around 9 a.m. The state tournament will be next Saturday at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.
