Show I Fishing and hunting survey shows contribution The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently released its preliminary prelim-inary findings of a national survey of fishing, hunting and wildlife associated as-sociated recreation in the United Slates. An estimated 100 million U.S. citizens cit-izens (more -than half of the U.S. population 16 years of age or older) pursued some wildlife related activity ac-tivity in 1991. Almost 40 million people spent time fishing andor hunting and 76 million spent time observing, feeding or photographing wildlife. In the intermountain area, 21 percent per-cent of all residents 16 years of age and older finished; 11 percent hunted; hunt-ed; and 44 percent participated in nonconsumptive wildlife activities. Beyond their aesthetic, scientific and recreational values, fish and wildlife represent big money to national na-tional and state economies. In 1991, resident anglers across the U.S. spent about $24 billion on equipment, equip-ment, transportation, food and lodging. lodg-ing. Hunters spent over $12 billion,, and nonconsumptive recreation accounted ac-counted for another $18 billion. In Utah, residents spent an estimated esti-mated $410.6 million dollars for hunting, fishing and noncomsump-tive noncomsump-tive wildlife recreation. In addition, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates that 170,000 nonresidents came to Utah and enjoyed some kind of wildlife experience here. Hunting, fishing and wildlife watching watch-ing by nonresidents accounted for an estimated 983,000 tourists days in Utah in 1991. The study suggests that wildlife remains an important part of national nation-al and state quality of life by contributing con-tributing to our recreational enjoyment enjoy-ment and economic strength. Students learn new physical education skills Students and teachers at Ashley and Naples Elementary schools were shown some new approaches to learning physical education skills last week. Scott Hess, physical education edu-cation consultant from the Utah State Office of Education spent a day at each school and taught kindergarten through fifth grade classes. Students learned about movement, coordination, rhythm and ball skills. Mr. Hess used balls of all types, a parachute, and large activity cards to get students involved. in-volved. He encouraged teachers to use the Utah State Core Guide to teach all the healthy lifestyles skills recommended recom-mended for each grade level. Hess stated that research shows that children chil-dren who participate in physical education ed-ucation do as well as or better in academics as those who don't take time from academics to participate in physical education. On Feb. 3, Hess provided a workshop work-shop for teachers from Ashley and Naples Elementary. Teachers learned many activities to use with their students.
