Show Lady footballers prepare to tame Pioneers The Lady Ute soccer team hosted Lehi last Wednesday in the first of their two region matchups with the winner taking an inside track to emerge as the number one seed. Both teams knew what was at stake and played like it. "This was the most emotional and intense girls soccer game I have ever seen," stated stat-ed Head Coach Randy Shafer. When you consider there were two red cards, two yellow cards, a fight and an overtime involved, you begin be-gin to get a picture of the level both teams played. With only two girl soccer teams in region VII, one will qualify as champion and have a first round home match while the other must play a champion from another region re-gion away. That distinction will be based solely on head-to-head competition com-petition with the two teams playing home and away. The game Wednesday began on a positive note for the Utes when forward for-ward Polly Shafer scored six min- utes into the game to give Uintah a 1-0 lead. Both teams went to the ball aggressively, ag-gressively, pushing the action up-field up-field as quickly as possible at all times. Lehi had several opportunities opportuni-ties to score but the Lady Ute de- ft Vernal Express 7-11 Restaurant, Uintah Recreation Association presents Pick the Winners College Football 1992 T J No charge to Enter This week the first place winner wins a chuckwagon dinner for two at the 7-11 Ranch Restaurant. The first half was marked by several sev-eral high kicking and tripping calls on both teams. One of the Lehi players was yellow carded for unsportsmanlike un-sportsmanlike conduct with an official. offi-cial. The Lehi team also seemed to be fighting amongst themselves as much as they did with their Uintah opponents. Several times the Lehi Coach had to separate his own team from each other. The second half featured the same rugged, intense play from both sides. Lehi finally scored with just nine minutes left in the game on a break away kick that was controversial controver-sial itself. "Their player definitely grabbed our defenseman to obtain possession," Coach Shafer stated. Evidently, one of the officials agreed and waved the goal off. But after a ten minute delay marked again by vehement arguing from players and coaches alike, the call was reversed by the head linesman and the goal was awarded to Lehi. During the delay, another Lehi player play-er was yellow carded for comments she made to the official. After order was restored, play resumed with the game tied 1-1. As the action heated up, so did tempers. During a struggle to control con-trol the ball 40 feet in front of the Uintah goal, a Lehi and Uintah player began fighting. Both were immediately red-carded and ejected from the game, leaving both sides one player short. The red card also carries suspension for the next game for both players. Neither team could score, although al-though both came very close before regulation ended, setting up a five minute overtime. In the overtime, Uintah missed two golden opportunities to score when they had the ball out in front of the Pioneer goal, but could not get it in. With less than a minute left in the overtime, Lehi managed to work the ball in from the left side for a shot that sailed over the head of Ute goalie Heidi Tolman who had made several outstanding stops during dur-ing the game for the winning goal. The two teams will go at it again today (Wednesday). For the Lady Utes to gain the championship, they must defeat Lehi by at least two goals, otherwise they enter the state tournament against a number one from another region on that teams' home turf.
