The unemployment rate is up from 6.7 percent in the 1990's fourth quarter. Uintah County's unemployment un-employment rale of 7 percent was up .9 from 6.1 percent in 1990 for the same quarter. Along with the increase, in-crease, the number of new unemployment unem-ployment insurance claims increased in-creased by 35.4 percent above last year for the district. Government was the major contributor con-tributor to job growth during the quarter, adding 380 new positions Basin wide. The WIC food program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is administered through state and local health agencies. agen-cies. Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have just had a baby, ba-by, and infants and children under the age of 5 may be eligible for the WIC program. WIC does not provide a complete diet, but gives supplemental foods high in iron, protein, calcium, and vitamins A, C, and D. The foods include in-clude iron-fortified infant formula, iron-fortified cereal, 100 fruit juice, eggs, milk, cheese, peanut butter and dried beans. To qualify for WIC, a person must live in Uintah, Duchesne or Daggett County. You must meet certain income in-come guidelines set lip by the State Department of Hcalifi and be pregnant preg-nant or be breastfeeding, or have children under the age of 5. If interested in applying for WIC, a person may call or visit the Uintah Basin Public Health Department in Vernal, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 781-0770, ext. 480, in Roosevelt, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 722-5085, 722-5085, in Duchesne, Fridays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 738-2002, in Manila on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 784-3494. The value of new residential construction increased, but this was offset by large decreases decreas-es in new nonresidential construction construc-tion and repairs, states the report. The District's unemployment rate is higher than the Utah average, 5.2 percent and the average for the U.S. 7 percent. The highest unemployment unemploy-ment in the district was Duchesne County with 9.9 percent. In Uintah County total nonfarm employment increased by 419 positions, posi-tions, reaching 7,470 for the quarter. This is a 5.9 percent increase over last year's fourth quarter. Uintah County again experienced a healthy increase in gross taxable sales. The second quarter total of $54.5 million was $7.4 million better bet-ter than 1990's second quarter total. Vcrnal's sales increased by $1.6 million, putting the second quarter total at $8.4 million. A gain of $2.9 million in retail general merchandise, merchan-dise, and $1.9 million in mining were offset by less monies collected in deferred payment than were collected col-lected in 1990's second quarter. Sale within the county's unincorporated unincorpo-rated area increased by $1.7 million. mil-lion. Economic events Uintah .County include: Construction started this fall on the new addition of the Vernal Golf Course. The Vernal Municipal Airport has money for improvement and maintenance projects. Uintah County has started construction con-struction of a new wing to the Care Center. Antlers Motel owners have eliminated several of its units and is replacing them with seven new units.
