Before setting up your tree, make a fresh, straight cut across the base of the trunk. About one inch is enough. Immediately place your tree in a water holding stand, or if you are not ready to decorate it, in a bucket of water. Don't ever let the base of the tree dry out or a seal will form and a new cut will be necessary. nec-essary. Check the water level daily. A fresh tree may absorb several pint to a gallon, of water each day. . . , A Christmas tree, like a bouquet of flowers, likes it cool and safe, so please don't put it near your fireplace, fire-place, heat source, or television seL Don't forget to unplug lights when you go to bed or leave home. Before decorating, be sure that the light cords and connections you use on your tree are in good working order to ensure a safe Christmas for your family. After the holidays a Christmas tree has many uses: 1. Place the Christmas tree in the garden or backyard and use it as a bird feeder. Orange slices will attract at-tract the birds and they can sit in the branches for shelter. 2. A Christmas tree is biodegradable; biodegrad-able; its branches may be removed and used as mulch in the garden. The trunk can be used for fuel or chopped for mulch. 3. Fir tree foliage can be stripped from the branches and snipped into small pieces for stuffing into aromatic aro-matic fir needle pillows for sofa or bedroom. 4. Sunk into fish pond, trees make excellent refuge and feeding areas for young fish. 5. Woodworking hobbyists can make a multitude of items from the trunk of a recycled Christmas tree.
