The balloonists attempted to catch a balloon the launched first and scored point by dropping bags at an "x" placed on the ground by the first balloon. A ground crew chased the balloons bal-loons to their landing site, where ever it might be. One of the finalists in the Vernal event had a race of his own. Curt Bramble, who placed second, rushed to Provo Saturday after his Vernal launch, to float over Cougar Stadium during the BYU San Diego State football game. He is under contract to fly over the stadium during dur-ing the games, said Marie Yoder, Uintah County Economic Development director. A hang glider glid-er was launched from Bramble's balloon while it floated over the stadium. sta-dium. The couple drifted away after the ceremony. When the day was over Ervin Oertli came in first, Curt Bramble second and Mike Gibson third. Yoder estimated that 6,000 to 7,000 people came to the airport to see the balloons and other activities during the day. Also Saturday, 21 boys took part in the skateboard competition at the airport. The skateboard competition and the balloonists were sponsored by the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce Projects Committee. First, Dan Turner updated the school board on the School Foods Program. Turner and his staff got together to brainstorm ways to improve school lunch and to promote pro-mote it more. During budget meetings in July, Turner said that the School Foods Program was in financial stress. . Changes had to be made in the " School Foods Program and they received a grant. Turner said that school lunch improvements might come through menus, attitudes and the way it is served. He also had positive comments com-ments about the principals. "Each principal has said whatever it takes to succeed in the program we'll do whatever wc can." Turner also said that he has been meeting with the principals and staff to discuss more about school lunch. "In a short time we'll be able to come up with a good lunch program," pro-gram," said Turner. Superintendent Grant Drollinger said that the principals were taking a more direct leadership roll toward the lunch program and everyone is working together to make it "our program." President D. Blayne Morrill questioned ques-tioned Turner about the new milk in the schools. The new company has had problems with hard to open cartons, car-tons, leaking cartons and frozen milk. Turner said he talked to the company and that the problems were being taken care of. Overall, Turner said the program will probably make it through. If school lunch can make more revenue rev-enue then they won't need to raise the price of school lunch. The board also clarified a two mill tax leeway that will be voted on by the public in November to reduce class sizes. Questions were raised on whether the leeway was binding or non-binding after it was voted on. After further discussion and reading section 53A-17-114 of the Utah Code book, board members said it was binding. About 50 students in the Uintah County School District have applied for home school release. The second reading on the building build-ing use was passed unanimously by the board. Also, employee approval was made. Board member Lyle Taylor suggested that the administration adminis-tration take care of this, but to let the board know who is being hired and why. Board members agreed. In board business matters Taylor brought up the Recreation Task Force. He asked board members to support this in order for the pool to be open on a year-round basis, for better use, less stress on the school board, one agency is better and more proficient, long range boundaries bound-aries and more equal use. Taylor and Gawain Snow are working on the swimming pool issue. President Morrill said that he was getting good reports about the Uintah School District, the superintendent, superin-tendent, his staff, principals and their staffs at state meetings. He also stated that there are 13 districts larger than Uintah and 26 smaller.
