Many residents find the prospect of the horse pull an exciting one not only will it allow local draft animal enthusiasts to participate partici-pate in a pull close to home, but it will help to stimulate the sagging economy. 'Vernal resident, Doug Critton is one of those. Critton rediscovered the allure of heavy draft horses about five years ago. A native Missouri farm boy, Critton had grown up working with draft animals. After moving to Vernal in 1960, Critton remarked that he and his wife, Sandy, had always al-ways "kept a few saddle horses around" but in 1983 decided to purchase pur-chase a team of work horses. He explained ex-plained that he finds the actual work and training of his large Percheron team extremely satisfying. Critton said wryly, "I haven't won very many matches, but I've managed to get into the money occasionally." He makes it clear however, that winning is a bonus working with his teams is a form of relaxation that is without equal. Critton works with his teams almost al-most everyday year round. Charlie and Kid, a pair of beautiful dappled gray Pcrchcrons, compose his seasoned sea-soned draft team. The massive hors es are gentle and alert and weigh approximately 1,900 lbs. each. Critton pointed out that even though they are classified as heavyweights, many of the teams competing against them weigh hundreds of pounds more. This weight difference differ-ence makes the continuous training even more important in order to win, Charlie and Kid must perform in harmony with each movement synchronized and smooth.
