McCurdy jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but his winning hopes received a jolt when Conrad Edwards scored a neutral and takedown with 38 seconds left in the second round for a 4-4 tie. McCurdy was no longer in the lead, but he wasn't ready to give up without a fight as jetted out from the bottom position, scored a reversal and pocketed a near fall to lead 9-4 after being tied 4-4 ten seconds earlier. McCurdy went on to win the bout with Payson, 12-4. Uintah whipped whip-ped Payson, 43-10, Thursday. "I pulled a standup switch and half nelsoned him. I put pressure on for the near fall points. I started off and hit the standup and then went to a switch for the reversal in the second round," stated McCurdy Bryan VanTassell is the first ninth grader to ever wrestle on the Ute varsity team. VanTassell struggled in his first two matches as he lost to Union and Pleasant Grove wrestlers. However, VanTassell has appeared to have recovered from his early tough times as he placed first in the Steamboat Springs Tournament and won matches against Carbon, Delta and Payson. VanTassell won his match with his Payson opponent on a ' plhursday lV,: "I pinned him with a double bar. I circled and crossed and put the pin in," said VanTassell. Senior Pin Power VanTassell gained a pin for the Uintah Utes, but seniors, Larry Wiseman, 145 and Steve Hatch, 185, also added falls to the Ute pin collection. collec-tion. Wiseman and Hatch pinned their opponents in the second round. "I pinned him with a double arm bar. I went for the single and then when I turned him I looked for the double," stated Hatch. "I pulled up tight and then sat out for the pin." "It was a reverse half for the pin. I went to run a bar and caught his arm and head with a half. I put him to the mat. I was checking him out in the first round and then got a takedown in the second round on a bear hug. I shot for the double and then worked it to a bear hug," said Wiseman. The Utes won the meet by 33 points, but Uintah head wrestling coach Ed Johnson was a bit disappointed because he felt the Uintah team had a shot at a shutout. Wrestling is the number one sport at Uintah High School because of 16 ctato phamninnshins sinpfi 19SR anrt the Utes aren't just satisfied with a win-they want the best victory possible possi-ble when they don they wrestling gear. "We won, but we were flat and a bit tired because of the three meets the week before, but a win is a win. Quinn Dickson had a bad ankle at 98 pounds and that hurt him in his match, which he lost by one point. Dickson wasn't able to practice all week long. Russell Augustus got too high in his 167 pound match and gave up near fall points," commented Johnson. "We try to do our best and we didn't get all the improvement we needed in the meet with Payson." Uintah suffers first hoop loss The Uintah varsity boys suffered their first loss of the season when they were ripped by the Wolves in Green River, Wyo., Friday, 70-49. However, the Ute sophomores and junior varsity teams were victorious. Brett Weldon led the Utes with 26 points on a number of inside moves. Green River had four players in double dou-ble figures. "They (Green River) are big. They started two 6-8 players, 6-7 athlete Cand 6-5 and 5-11 guards. They are rated the number one 4-A team in Wyoming," remarked Uintah head coach Kim Peterson. The Union Cougars snapped a four game losing streak, Friday when they roped the Grantsville Cowboys for an 80-65 triumph in Grantsville. The win improves Union's mark to 2-4.
