Pinewood derby, awards given by Cub Scout pack Cub Scout Pack 243 squared off for a Pinewood Derby, March 20. Those who raced to victory were: Webelos; 1st place, Kyle Kline, and 2nd Ryan Childs, Bears; 1st place Jeremy Jensen and 2nd, Wyatt Hadlock, Wolves; 1st place Denny Birchell and 2nd place Jonathan Beede. They received derby medals for first place wins and ribbons for second. Certificates and candy bars were given to all of the boys. There was a bake sale at the meeting and the flag ceremony was presented by the Bears of Den 2. Another important event took place at the meeting, a special award ceremony honored Nathan Christiansen, Chris-tiansen, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Christiansen. He was given the Arrow of Light Award which was presented in an Indian In-dian setting. Nathan is a 5th grader at Discovery Elementary School. The designs of three Naples Elementary School students have been combined to create a Naples City Ci-ty logo. After careful consideration, the field was narrowed to three winners: first graders, Amiel Cook, son of Dora and Gaylon Cook, and Gregory Hatch, son of Brent and Pam Hatch, and Grant Murcock who is a 4th grade student and the son of Lee and Alice Murdock. A significant contribution was taken from each boy's entry. A smiling smil-ing sunshine from Amiel, a format layout from Gregory and lightening bolts from Grant designs became a the "Energize Me" logo which will be used as a letter head and as a flyer design for the Naples Day celebration. Judges Marge Martin, Howard Weaver, Norman Merrell and Criag Blundt poured over 43 entries before choosing the combination that depicted the energy related businesses and warm feeling that is part of Naples City. As a reward for their efforts in city sponsored logo contest, the boys received a cash prize, letter of accommodation, ac-commodation, a bag of candy, and they will be the city's guests at the 4th of July barbecue. The "Energize Me" logo will be printed on tee shirts, bumper stickers, city stationery and more. The annual Naples Day celebration has been planned for the first part of August. y a ,x .v; THIS WILL BECOME a familiar sight on letter heads and flyers for Naples City. The logo design was chosen after a contest was held among Naples Elementary School students. Churches to observe Palmarum, March 31 By Robert Taster, pastor of Our Saviour Lutheran in Vemal Sunday, March 31, is known as "Palmarum" or Sunday of the Palms and has special significance throughout Christianity. Christians will hear such Bible readings as Matthew 21:1-11, which recount the triumphant entry of Christ into Jerusalem, while the crowds surrounding him waved palm branches and placed them on the road before Christ as he rode a donkey into the capital city of Judea in approximately 30 A D. Several reasons caused the crowd's reaction of admiration and adoration, namely Jesus' fame as a teacher and healer, and his recent miracle of having hav-ing raised his friend Lazarus from the dead in Bethany. Many then, as today, believe he is God"s Son. ClirisUlns have observed Palm Sunday, which begins "Holy Wetk' prior to Easter, with exchanging of palm branches or palm crosses during dur-ing worship services. Many churches also encourage members to keep these palm branches until the following follow-ing year, to be burned on Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday traditionally tradi-tionally begins the season of Lent, the annual 6even-week observation of preparation for Easter by special emphasis on Jesus suffering, crucifixion and death. The ashes of the palms are then rubbed lightly on the forehead to symbolize sorrow, humility and repentance for sin. Many churches in the Vernal area will be observing Holy Week with special services, including special Easter services. A Good Friday Wor ship service will be observed at Our Saviour Lutheran, 400 South 5oo West, April S at 7:30 p.m. Easter services ser-vices will be at 6:30 and 11 a.m. with a breakfast at 7:30 a m. People of the area are welcome to worship God during any or all of the events. THIS MALE collieshepherd is available for adoption from the Uintah County Animal Shelter. Other pets are also available. 789-5601. Newcomers plan luncheon meet Making the transition to a new home in a strange community is difficult dif-ficult at best. Some newcomers to the Vernal area have taken a step to remove the sting from this experience. ex-perience. Newcomers Paulette Anderson and Mary Hudson have arranged a good experience for those ready to meet others who are new to the area. They invite everyone to join them at a no- host luncheon at the Sheraton Inn on the first and third Tuesdays of each week at noon, for "A chat, lunch and to enjoy a fashion show." "We will visit, on an informal basis, with women who understand the experiences associated with relocating," explained the women. There will be door prizes given at the luncheon as well. Reservations may be made by calling call-ing the Sheraton. The first luncheon is set for April 2 where fashions from Adrianna's will be shown.
