Show Vernal Junior High top students Education Conference scheduled for March 6 Wednesdoy, Februory 20, 1985 VefTial EypfeSS 1 5 During the last few weeks, many students at the Vernal Junior High have received honors which pertain to their academic standing. There were 58 students who received a GPA of 3.75-4.0 during the first semester of school. There were 121 students who received a GPA of 3.5-4.0 for the second se-cond quarter. Thre were also 92 students who received 5 "honors" on their citizenship record. These students have the distinction of being in the HIGH 5 Qub. The second annual Uintah Basin Adult Education Conference is scheduled at the Uintah Basin Area Vocational Center in Roosevelt Wednesday, March 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The theme of the conference is "Preparing for Our Brave New World.". Keynote speaker will be Gordon Bowen, vice president of Bonneville Media and who produces the commercials commer-cials on communications and families for the LDS Church. His topic will be "Controlling the Media Consumption in Your Home or Weaning Oneself of Dallas." "I have heard this presentation and felt it addressed one of the most contemporary con-temporary problems we have in our homes," states Holly Baker, Uintah County home agent. "His message is something everyone should hear," adds Mrs. Baker. There will be eight specialists from the College of Family Life at Utah State University who will be conducting conduc-ting the workshops during the day. Since Clyde Merkley and Virgil have the same birthday, Virgil and Minnie went to church in Tridell with the Merkleys and then enjoyed a birthday dinner with their friends at their home. Later that day, the family gathered at Kay Rasmussen's home for ice cream and cake and many presents. The high spot of the day was a happy birthday telephone call from Virgil's daughter' Eileen Christensen, from Canada. There's a new little boy in the Duane Ainge home. His name is Michael C. Ainge and he checked in at 5 lbs. 12 oz. He joins his brother, Jared, 2. at home. Proud mom is Lana Ainge. President Shirley and Bernice Ainge and Mrs. Eldon Allrcd are the grandparents, and the great grandparents are Nile and Ella Ainge. Friends and relatives of Eva At-wine, At-wine, who died last week, overflowed the WMerocks chapel Saturday for the funeral. Eva was especially loved by the children, as the always gave them candy. Some of the topics to be covered include: in-clude: home decorating, decisions with precision, time management, stress management, raising competent compe-tent kids, personal and financial money management, beating the blues, gourmet on the go, computers in the home, family activity ideas, planning for the golden years, wardrobe war-drobe planning, self esteem, communicating com-municating with teens, leadership skills, conflict management, listening, goal setting, creating storage in our homes and trends in the employment market. "The conference has something for every adult in the Basin and we are pleased to have such high quality presenters," states Keith Bergquist, director of the UBAVC. We also have several local experts who will be presenting workshops. They include: Dennis Garner, Business Department chairman; Keith Bergquist, director of UBAVC; Rose Miller, communication communica-tion specialist; Jim Curtis, local realtor, and Kirk Seeley, CPA. Cost of the conference will be $6 for those pre-registered by March 1 and $7.50 for those who register at the door. The cost includes lunch. Golden Age Activities By Wanda Powell A nice crowd attended the dinner last Monday and was favored with a reading by Edris Karren. It was also nice to welcome Lyla Bennion home. Paul and Ada Murray and Melvin Gardner were back. We have missed all of them. To all those in the hospital and the ones that are not able to come out, hurry hur-ry and get well, we miss you. The bingo winners were Alice Watson Wat-son and Evelyn Sheffer, first place and Alice Mott was second place. Quite a few are taking advantage of the exercise class. It is from 12 noon until 1 p.m. each Thursday, followed by the afternoon games. The last two Friday night dances have had much better crowds. Marimba Virtuoso in concert Feb. 26 Linda Maxey, marimba virtuoso, will be presented to the members of the Uintah Community Concert Association on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 8: 15 p.m. in the Vernal Junior High School auditorium, according to Curtis May, association president. Admittance is by membership card only. Linda Maxey, who began studying piano at the age of four and marimba at six, gave her first major performance perfor-mance at eleven when she appeared at Madison Square Garden in New York for the Kiwanis International Convention. Conven-tion. As an undergraduate at North Texas State University, where she earned her BA in music, she was selected to participate in a department of defense-sponsored tour of France and Germany. Ms. Maxey holds an MA degfree from the Eastman School of Music, is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, the national honorary music fraternity, the Percussive Arts Society Socie-ty and Mu Phi Epsilon international music fraternity and has taught at Baylor University and Long Beach City Ci-ty College. Ms. Maxey is also active in community affairs in Lawrence, Kansas, Kan-sas, where she lives with her husband and two children. In fulfilling her goal of establishing the marimba as an effective concert instrument, she has taken her artistry to audiences in New York, Washington, D.C., and other major cities and colleges and universities throughout the United States as well as in Europe. Community Concert members are reminded that they may loan their membership cards if they are unable to attend, and that they may bring out-of-town guests with them.
