Fifty-five members of the Licensed Licens-ed Practical Nurses's Association of of Utah congregated at the Vernal Sheraton for their 30th Annual Convention, Con-vention, Friday and Saturday. The association's annual meeting is used to update LPNs across the state to the problems and challenges facing the LPN profession. Of primary concern Thursday was Proposal 85 which is before the Utah Legislature to eliminate LPN classes. What a lot of hospitals are doing is not hiring any more LPNs and replacing them with Registered Nurses. "In the past we have been very bland," saidThelma K. Staurt, president presi-dent of the Utah LPN association. "Now we need to show our strength. We are getting pushed out. Some (hospitals) are not allowing LPNs at all." Besides protecting their jobs, the elimination of LPN and their replacement replace-ment with registered nurses will increase in-crease medical costs. "People cannot afford all this expense ex-pense in health care," said Fern Kallas, editor of the LPN magazine "On Call," which is produced by the association. Staurt encouraged members to sign up more LPNs in the association Farmers eligible for USDA disaster loans Farmers in Uintah County who suffered suf-fered physical losses because of natural disaster may now apply for Farmers Home Administration (FmHA) emergency loans, FmHA County Supervisor Alan Britton said today. The county became eligible under new legislation which provides that counties bordering on those which have been named eligible for disaster assistance are also eligible for such assistance. Mr. Britton said farmers who suffered suf-fered physical losses because of excessive ex-cessive rainfall and flooding which occurred oc-curred July 24, in Garfield County, Colorado, Col-orado, and are unable to get credit elsewhere, may apply for reduced-interest reduced-interest loans to cover up to 80 percent of their production losses up to $500,000. The loans carry a 5 percent interest rate for the first $100,000 and a 8 percent per-cent interest on funds over $100,000. For those able to get credit elsewhere but who choose to apply for FmHA loans, the interest rate is 13.75 percent. Farmers who think they are eligible may apply for assistance at the FmHA county office, 80 North 500 West, Vernal, Ver-nal, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Mon. thru Fri. The deadline for accepting applications is June 3, 1985. Mr. Britton urged farmers to file their application as early as possible to speed processing and check delivery. Terminal... , continued from page 1 request. The county has sent a letter to the governor requesting that someone from the Uintah Basin be on the Impact Im-pact Board which is composed of members from other state boards. The only two eligible candidates for the position would be Irvin Haws, who sits on the state water board, and Mayor Sam Snyder who sits on the governor recreation committee. The parking lot, runway ramp, access ac-cess road and lighting for the terminal ter-minal building were built in 1980 by a grant from the FAA with the requirement require-ment that the city and county would build a terminal building at the site. -V h I ATI II M l I .f NEWSPAPER N 2 WEEK t tfri 1984 C9 21 and to show greater opposition to the 85 proposal.
