A MIRROR-LIKE High Uinta Lake is an excellent camp and enjoy a couple of days of rich solitude setting for a fisherman and his wife to set up How to catch high country trout By Hartt Whom Vernal Express Outdoors Writer Once I wrote a story for Outdoor Life called, "How to catch High Country Trout." Now, as then, I firmly believe the alpine trout is a world apart from his lowland cousin. Almost enough to nearly be considered a wholly different dif-ferent species! The Outdoor Life piece outlined a trip taken with Moon Lake outfitters up Lake Fork on south slope of the I'in-tas I'in-tas Into Crater Lake. The I'inta guide books say Crater averages Ri feet dfp. That is why I slate my cooking, eating, hiking around the mid day fishing period. In fact, cooking can be held to breakfast and supper, with snacks when angling is apt to best. You may find a flurry of fly fishing activity ac-tivity in the morning and evening, and it seems stream fed lake Inlrts ore always good through the day (as are alpine streams); but the deejier the lakes in particular tend to have fish of habits. .Smaller waters can have large trout, and I often check thm out because it's easier to find them at any time of diy. Just do not write off that lake near the trail (or behind the remote peak) because you saw no fish activity on it. Quinces are excellent Uiat if it is more than 12 feet deep, has Inlet water, and does not have waterdogs (salamanders) it has in my experience alpine trout. A few years ago a pilot friend and I had to fly an official of the state to the Uintah Basin and drop him off. It was my request that we buzz over some lakes on the south slopes of Uintas before heading home. Somewhere this side of the Yellowstone and west of Heller Lake we spotted a pretty lake whose color denoted a depth which may support a population of fish without winter kill. We circled the area a few times and tried to find the best way to hike in. After I made a brief sketch from the air we went home. Two weeks later I was In the M'lwted location to begin my trek to the l.ke, I tried looking at maps and reading the little booklets the Division of Wildlife lU'soiirces bad put out to tdrjihfy what lake it was that held my f.i .;!).!! urn No ut h lin k and I had to hike in l)mi Mv tf.nM led through deadfalls, rot k !jde and deadend, but I made It M'.rT w-vrtsl b'Hif of e;it and r,snis(S I mj!J never embark on df-i1.i: m f. .hJt ng;in. Wood was broken and placed under the shelter of an accom-madating accom-madating pine. (I know Mr. Camper that one should always make camp first and then have fun fishing later but you should have been there, I couldn't resist). It took some time to find my usual five flat rocks about a foot to eighteen inches square to make my oven with, but I was able to make one and begin building my fire inside to get the rocks hot enough to bake my fish and heat up a much needed brew of tea. Water rings from occasional jumps of a feeding fish was interspersed with the increasing dimples of rain drops. I watched from the opening of my tent and ate the fish and drank the tea. The biscuits from my frozen roll of dough provided the finishing touch to my meal. The main part of the storm was to the north and passed the camp by without fanfare. The air was freshened freshen-ed and the verdant 'scape was enhanced enhanc-ed to becoming a photographer's dream. The next day brought more time for exploring and finding a better way out. There were no trails to be found which would indicate an easy passage back to the road, but the lay of the land made me consider taking the west side of the small basin out and thence to the ---. At noon I ate some bome-made jerky and a ball of raisins with chocolate and nuts and struck camp and began the trip back to the road. In four and a half hours I hit the road and in another thirty minutes was uncovering un-covering my motorcycle from its place of concealment. The trip was worth everything and unfortunately not long enough. Labor Dav week-end approached a month after my odyssey and my wife was preparing to go along for my return trip. She was allowed to make a careful selection of food to take as we always try to take in food for about one and a half meals per day. (It seems we take too much food on most forays doesn't it?) The rest of our meals for the three days there would be dependent on what we could catch or gather. She never complained going in or coming out and was planning the next trip back in. She had a successful catch of fish and had built a small rocked in pool to hold them until ready for cooking those which weren't eaten were turned loose. All in all, I have enjoyed many trips alone and look forward to more, but when I can have my bride along and see her enjoy things.. .well sportsfans, what can I say but to "take your lady camping" and enjoy their experience with them. : ."s" r lii'vt ' i'i -,n sti- i(.(f ii iix u is' if I. ; .i i n ' - ' tii.t, 1 f , - 1 '. , , 1 rf 1 : t. i j t 1; .i ' " 4' -i'.'i ... . ,.
