Cinematic Sentiments By Dr. Allen Hasson Ten best summer movies Yes, Virginia, there are good movies playing this summer! In our travels this year, we visited with small-town newspaper editors who simply refuse to publish movie reviews. Their contention is that, with so much trash on the screen these days, it's better not to give editorial space to movies and draw attention to them. Of course, this ignores the obvious fact that people are still going to theaters in great numbers, often end up angry that they wasted money on tickets, and wish they'd had more advance ad-vance information on the product. But seldom will movie fans find more decent entertainment than what's showing on the silver screen this summer. It's good news for folks who had almost given up on finding movies suitable for their kids, or those who had completely given up on finding fin-ding something they could enjoy with the kids. Ladies and gentlemen of the conservative conser-vative persuasion, we take great pleasure in announcing the presence of ten count 'em, ten quality films playing all In one summer! Each is a high-quality product, and most are enjoyable en-joyable for all ages. The first six films on the list contain a little profanity, "Gremlins" has violence, and "Starfighter" and "The Natural" convey brief and relatively mild sexual overtones. The remaining four, three of which are rated pg, should all be rated G, in our opinion, and we're fussy. 1. THE LAST STARFIGHTER Downright fun, stirring, comical, uplifting space adventure with a few original twists, and enough dreams-come-true fantasy to draw cheers from all ages. 2. THE KARATE KID Chopsocky "Rocky" with a spiritual side, as a picked-on teenager goes deeper than karate moves to develop what it takes to cope. 3. PHAR LAP True story of Australia's great race horse who died mysteriously in 1932 at the height of his incredible career. 4. STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK The best Trek yet, "III" recaptures the spirit of the old TV series, with good visual achievement as well. 5. THE NATURAL One of the best films of '84, possibly Robert Redford's finest picture and performance ever. So visually stunning, would be a treat without story and sound, which are delightful as well. 6. GREMLINS Some say "Gremlins" is too violent, and it probably is for very young children. But we saw this Steven Spielberg production by director direc-tor Joe Dante, as allegory, a screamingly scream-ingly funny putdown of all that's crazy in human behavior. 7. NEVERENDING STORY Marvelously realized flight of fancy by "Das Boot" director Wolfgang Petersen, takes a boy into the world of Fantasia where only an Earthling can save the fascinating creatures who live there. Petersen captures the hearts of children and adults at the same time, and makes kids want to read. 8. THE MUPPETS TAKE MANHATTAN MANHAT-TAN Third Muppet movie is the best, as Kermit and company go to New York to get produced on Broadway. Thoroughly delightful for children from beginning to end. 9. JUNGLE BOOK Re-reiease of the Disney production, with much detail of the Kipling classic pushed aside to make room for comical musical numbers and sight gags. 10 KOYAAN1SQATS1 This film defies description. It is a collection of the most stunning natural and human sights ever filmed, with no story, dialogue, sex or violence. It's not exactly ex-actly a documentary or travelogue either, but a thoughtful presentation trying to show the need for harmony between man and nature. "Koyaams-qatsi" "Koyaams-qatsi" (pronunced coy yawny-scotsy), a Hopi word meaning "life out of balance", is a must see for everyone! Hopefully, the limited schedule of early ear-ly screenings will expand to reach more cities. - -f- MBIMIilMMMM!JIHJI,MLl . nr- ....
