Family reunions, fishing forays into the back country and camping cam-ping out is what summer is all about. Are you prepared? You can bet the-ticks the-ticks and skeeters are packing their bags and heading for your favorite spot. ..they are waiting just for you. This year, the flooding situation is going to produce a bumper crop of the flying nasties. Patio parties and trying try-ing to spend quiet evenings on the back porch are likely to be a challenge of endurance. A few years ago a childhood chum and I finished up the spring quarter at the university. We contacted two other friends w ho were getting out of school and made plans for our annual assault on the beaver ponds north of Fish Lake in Southern Utah. About a week before we w ere to embark. em-bark. Hon. my chum from school, gave me some little white pills w ith instruc-1 instruc-1 lions to take two a day until we go I camping and one a day while there. This invited a normal qtifry: "Why do you want me to take little while fiilLs? I suffer from nothing other than getting away from the world and I into the UiMim of mother nature." This becomes a systemic repellant to mosquitos." Ron continued: "If you're already taking B vitamins then cut back on the dosage about half.. .don't worry, it's harmless and should work for most people." Not only was I fortunate to learn from Ron's pharmacopoeial expertise, but I also bought six bottles of insect repellant from an army surplus store at one dollar each. A bargain indeed, considering the formula on the bottle was 75 percent "DEET." I have never found, until recently, any commercial preparation of "DEET" in excess of 35 percent. In such low concentrations it is virtually impossible to repel anything. What is "DEET" you ask? Ever hear of "N-diethyl-meta-touluaminde"? This is the technical name for "DEET" and when in concentrations con-centrations of 70 percent and above is effective against many pests, including in-cluding ticks. A newer version is commercially com-mercially prepared under the name of 'MUSKOL' and can be purchased about anywhere at a decent price. The military, for whom the above compound was developed, found it to be harmless to their cotton clothing, but beware when using strong concentrations; concen-trations; I noticed that the plastic frames on my sun glasses became checked and possibly weakened. I placed a strip along the frames where contact with the skin w as evident and experienced no further problems. The substance requires judicious application applica-tion as it can have a mild sting to the eyes and a bitter taste. It is odorless and shouldn't be washed off. I should add that sweating reduces its potency and need for additional application may be requit ed. I like to saturate a small cloth and place it in a plastic or metal film container. con-tainer. You can then wipe it across your face and neck or back of hands whenever needed. Remember, try to get the compound in concentrations in excess of 70 percent and you can enhance the enjoyment of your next trip. Thinking hack on my foiling trip w i!h my friend.
