NEW BOOKS: Further Up The Organization: How To Stop Management From Stifling People and Strangling Productivity by Rohert Townsend (nonfiction) This revision of a 1970 bestseller relates the ways in which our time-honored time-honored 6rganizational practices, policies, and routines actually stifle people and strangle both productivity and profit. It suggests how things (and people) should work as opposed to how they do. Townsend offers advice to managers and business people at all levels, and in plain words outlines a way to humanize business and allow it to flourish in the 1980's. 30 new material. When that unwelcome episode is followed by the murder of the man who got her the job, Rita embarks on a crusade to track down the murder followed everwhere by the mysterious portrait painter Johnson. Lord Of The Dance by Andrew M. Greeley (fiction) On the surface the Farrell family appears to be a family of successful people with everything to live for, but alcoholism, loss of faith, and a malaise of the spirit threatens the family. Noele is determined to see her family dance again, one reborn and renewed, even when they cling tq despair. The Aquitaine Progression by Robert Ludlum (fiction) International lawyer Joel Converse is summoned to a secret meeting in Geneva where he receives evidence that a group of aging generals are planning to take over the world. Death At Charity's Point by William G.Tappley (mystery) When George Gresham's body washes ashore after a plumment from Charity 's Point, a cliff near Boston, everyone wonders if it was suicide or murder. X Stands For Unknown by Isaac Asimov (nonfiction) Asimov shines his spotlight on subjects in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and astronomy with the same clarity and humor that have made him a household word. From computer chips to X-rays, from the genesis of the flat earth theory to creationism, from color blindness to Halley's comet, Asimov illuminates the universe with his customary flair, teaching, exploring and inspiring. Honoring the Self by Nathaniel Branden (nonfiction) Psychologist Branden demonstrates how self-esteem is a continuum, a process that begins in childhood and never ends, and how absence of self, not selfishness, is the beginning of many of society's evils. He examines the roots of self-esteem in biology, religion, social institutions, family dynamics, work, love, education, and shows how certain organizations and institutions can subvert self-esteem. The Kings Way : The Life of Madame De Maintenon by Francoise Chander- nagor (fiction) A fictionalized autobiography of a passionate woman, Madame de Maintenon. Born in a prison, raised in poverty, she wanted nothing less for herself than the dazzling brilliance of Louis XIV's royal court. But later this intelligent, complex woman was to feel herself the victim of her exalted position. Already a bestseller in France. Light in base of kitchen island can be switched on at night. Glass kitchen shimmers People are rediscovering the beauty beau-ty of glass block for their homes. Popular during the forties and the years bracketing that decade, glass block fell out of favor for a long while. Now it's the height of fashion again. Glass block can do magical things to a room, as seen in a kitchen and connecting con-necting family room created by Thomas Hills Cook of Armstrong's Interior In-terior Design Center in Lancaster, Pa. Used as an exterior wall or window, it filters the light to give a room a sparkling, sparkl-ing, shimmering, jewel-like quality. Plus, it's a good insulator and security securi-ty provider (just try to break it!). Designer Cook lavished glass block over the kitchen and family room. In the kitchen, it's used for an enormous window (non-opening, of course) in the sink area. In the family room, it forms one outside wall and part of another. And the crowning touch : It's used in the base of the custom-made kitchen island and.there's a light in the base for special nighttime effect. The piece de resistance is a circular white neon light hanging in the kitchen window. The color scheme is a muted and relaxing peach (walls, cabinets, wood trim), terra cotta (ceiling beams in kitchen, contemporary sofa in family room) and almond-beige (the Designer Solarian no-wax floor in a realistic flagstone pattern that flows throughout both rooms, helping to tie them together into a decorative whole.) Beige, also, are the double-sink and the commercial-grade sueded cloth upholstery of the Thonet stools, which are drawn up to the kitchen island. The countertops, kitchen appliances, hanging hang-ing lamps over the island and armchairs arm-chairs (in the family room) are stark white. This setting was planned for practicality prac-ticality and utility, also. Two large closets next to the refrigerator afford an unusual amount of space for food and small-appliance storage. All of the rooms' surfaces are wiped-clean, and the Armstrong no-wax floor eliminates drudgery. There's even a personal computer on a small desk for menu planning and budgeting. No wonder glass block is making a comeback. With its radiance and sparkle, it's like ornamenting your home with precious gems.
