Baker, Director 1984 No.3 New Arrivals: Across The Sea Of Suns by Gregory Benford (science fiction) This sequel se-quel to the author's famous, award-nominee novel In The Ocean Of Night, is a science fiction novel of deep-space exploration and alien invasion. Drawn with the breath of vision and scientific precision, Benford's ambitious novel sets a whole new standard of excellence in art and in scientific speculation. Is That All There Is?: Overcoming Disappointment In An Age Of Diminished Expectations by David Brandt (nonfiction) Why has the "Me" generation turned into the generation of the chronically depressed? Drawing on his years of clinical experience, psychologist David Max Brandit provides a strategy for overcoming disappointment, disappoint-ment, and avoiding it in the future. Dr. Brandt found that many of his patients felt unfulfilled, even cheated, by life despite their good jobs, comfortable homes, and stable marriages. He explains how we delude ourselves with unrealistic expectations, and tells how to adjust ad-just to reality. Femininity by Susan Brownmiller (nonfiction) Brownmiller approaches ap-proaches a subject of immense significance: the set of social structures, struc-tures, biological facts, and esthetic ideals that governs the lives of half of America, and that goes by the name of Femininity. Examined Examin-ed here is the feminine esthetic from all sides: its roots in history; the paradox of a standard that is at once "baffling inconsistent" and "minutely, demanding concrete," and above all, what it means today. Strained Relations by Alison Cairns (mystery) In a small close-knit Cornish town, no family is more close-knit than the Quinns, and when Caroline Quinn disappears, the family ties become even stronger. It takes an outsider, solicitor Toby Wilde who once dreamed of being be-ing a detective to view the disappearance objectively. Indeed, it is only Toby who can imagine that Caroline might be dead, and why each of the Quinns might have had reasons for killing her. Healthy Living In An Unhealthy World: Food For Survival In A Polluted World by Edward J. Calabrese and Michael W. Dorsey (nonfiction) No matter where we live, we are surrounded by a virtual ocean of toxic and carcinogenic pollutants. In the comprehensive, readable book, the authors draw upon the latest research results in the health and environmental sciences to show us how we can use our diet to minimize or even neutralize the toxic effects from the countless pollutants that surround us in our air, water, food, even the houses we live in. The Celebrity Book of Lists: Fascinating Facts About Famous People by Ed Lucaire (nonfiction) How many times has Mickey Rooney been married? Who's lefthanded? Who's toted a toupee? Who's had a nose job? These and tens of thousands of other engaging facts about celebrities and famous people are compiled in an easy-to-read compendium com-pendium of lists and comparisons. A Matter of Honor by William P. McGivern (fiction) When a Chicago homicide lieutenant starts investigating a series of murders of Army Ar-my servicemen, he comes on a smuggling "loop" set up by two Army Ar-my sergeants between Frankfurt, Germany, and Chicago. When he is gunned down, it is his father, a retired general wanting to assuage the bitterness that divided father and son during the Vietnam years, who decides to avenge his death by taking on the son's mission himself. Mysteries Of Winterthurn by Joyce Carol Oates (fiction) Xavier Kilgarvan, an idealistic detective, is confronted with three baffling cases, all in Winterthurn, the place of his birth. He investigates one case where bizarre murders occur during the night in the "Honeymoon "Honey-moon Room" of the Kilgarvan mansion. In the second case, he investigates in-vestigates the murder of local factory girls, and in the third case, he manages to unravel a triple murder and resolve his long-standing passion for his half-cousin Perdita. Roman by Roman Polanski (biography) Notorious film director Roman Polanski tells the full story of his life from his childhood in Nazi Poland to the present. He gives an account of his professional life as well as the personal experiences that have shaped him including his account of the Sharon Tate tragedy and the morals charges in 1977 that caused him to become a fugitive from American justice. The result is a book as compelling to read as his films are to watch. You can avoid throwing money out the window if you use proper care in choosing and using draperies. Here are a few hints. When you buy drapes, ask for totally total-ly preshrunk fabric. Ask about the col-orfastness col-orfastness of the fabric and its resistance to fading from light and atmospheric at-mospheric exposure. Linen drapes usually last longer. Read all the care instructions that accompany your purchase. Ask for them if they are not offered and share this information with your drycleaner when the drapes are cleaned. To prolong the life of your draperies, clean them frequently, at least once a year, and vacuum regularly between cleanings. Rotate draperies if possible to vary light exposure. Protect draperies from moisture, such as rain through an open door or window or condensation on the window panes. Many drapery fabrics are surface printed rather than dyed. Some of these colors, especially very deep or bright colors, are not colorfast. This type of color failure is the responsibility responsibili-ty of the manufacturer. Often the color col-or loss is unobjectionable, but it is wise to have all matching draperies cleaned clean-ed at once, so any dulling of color is uniform. Matching bedspreads and furniture covers should also be cleaned clean-ed at the same time. A free brochure with other important impor-tant facts about draperies is available from many fine member drycleaners. It is published by the International Fabri-care Institute, and called "Selecting and Caring for Your Draperies." Soap Beat Bi-coastal Haskell juggles acting, family, studies By Connie Passalacqua "I was 'bi-coastal' long before Peter Allen and his songs ever made it chic," says Peter Haskell, who commutes approximately three times a month between his Los Angeles home and the New York studio where he tapes his role of businessman Lloyd Kendall on "Search for Tomorrow." He estimates his high-flying habit costs him $18,000 a year. "I pay the costs entirely myself," he says. "The show is kind enough to me that they schedule my work in consecutive blocks so I can usually spend about four days a week in the studio stu-dio and three at home." Haskell's wife, Crickett, owns a theatrical agency in California, where the couple cou-ple are raising their two children, Audra, 7, and Jason, 4. Haskell had a bi-coastal upbringing. He was born in Boston, while his father was in graduate school. The family eventually moved to Bakersfield, Calif. He returned to Boston to attend Harvard and then lived in New York in the early '60s where he launched his acting career. He returned to California to star in such nighttime series as "Bracken's World." He later played a villain in the miniseries, "Rich Man, Poor Man, Book II." ft , if w Peter Haskell He began his daytime (and current commuting) careers last year, masterfully master-fully playing Hollis Kirkland III on "Ryan's Hope." As if commuting isn't hectic enough, Haskell is also a part-time student at New York University Law School. "I have so much free time, it keeps me out of trouble," he jokes. "Seriously,- I was -accepted;, to ? Columbia ' Law - School when I finished college, but I decided to act instead. But I really got interested in law a few years ago when I was on the board of trustees trus-tees of the Screen Actors' Guild. I really liked to negotiate nego-tiate contracts." Haskell makes every minute of his week count. "I do my law studying on the plane to California and my 'Search' lines studying on the flight back to New York." 1984Compulog Vernal City SEOET MOBS Program I BANKRUPTCY a Ko By Warren Melslin 1.
