The Utah Farm Bureau Federation, representing a majority of the farmers and ranchers adversely affected by earlier-than-usual deer and elk damage to fields and hay supplies, has charged that the problem could have been avoided by better management of the animals by the Division of Wildlife Resources. The state's big game herds have been managed for too many years with the "primary goal" of increasing herd sizes to provide a quality hunting experience ex-perience for deer and elk hunters, without sufficient consideration given to the carrying capacity of the ranges upon which the animals feed, said UFB President Frank Nishiguchi. "The result has been thousands of dollars in damages to landowners added add-ed expense to taxpayers for feeding programs, and unnecessary suffering by starving deer and elk which are not included in those feeding efforts," said Nishiguchi. "To a significant degree this happens every year, at the expense ex-pense of farmers and ranchers whose livestock feed is lost or ruined. This year the loss is even more severe because many livestock producers face a critical shortage of feed due to the loss of high quality hay production in last summer's floods and wet weather." The Farm Bureau leader said DWR, "and all others who influence its policy," should re-examine the Marie Soderquist dies Tuesday Marie Soderquist, 87, of Vernal passed pass-ed away Jan. 10, 1984 at the Ashley Valley Medical Center. He said the big game herd size must be brought back into balance with the available feed resources, particularly particular-ly in critical winter range. He advocated ad-vocated the modification of "buck only" on-ly" hunts to allow the harvest of both males and females in enlarged hunts that will result in a larger deer and elk harvest each year "to prevent overpopulation over-population and starvation of animals." He said that may require legislative action to give the Board of Big Game Control and DWR more flexibility in those decisions. Nishiguchi also called on DWR to immediately begin an "emergency harvest" in critical areas to prevent further starvation of the animals. "It is inhumane and unrealistic to believe that we can maintain herds that are too large for available resources," he said. "It is not possible to find and feed all the animals in need of feed this year or any other year." Farmers and ranchers believe that wildlife and the public and private lands upon which they live are a precious natural resource, Nishiguchi said. "We co-exist with the game and utilize the land with them. It is vital that we develop a practical method to manage them consistent with the available resources."
