Baker, Director LIBRARY HAPPENINGS : November Holidays the library will be closed on the following days: Fri day, Nov. 11 for Veteran's Day and Thursday, Nov. 24 for Thanksgiving. New Library Hours: Monday thru Thursday from 12 Noon until 9 p.m. Fri day and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Sundays and Holidays-closed. Art Show : The paintings of Janice Leech and some of her students are now on display in the library multipurpose room. A reception will be held this Saturday, Nov. 12 from 2 until 4 p.m. Book Sale : We still have many used books on our sale table. They are priced at 2 for a quarter. OUR NEWEST BOOKS: Electronic Life: How to Think About Computers By Michael Crichton (nonfiction) In this book about computers for the layman, Chrichton tells what they really are, how to choose them, how to think about them, and how to enjoy them. He covers such practical matters as buying a computer, computer anatomy, computer eyestrain, jargon, jobs, keyboard, microchips, and magnetic fields. Mandarin by Robert Elegant (novel) A saga of two families of the Jewish faith living in China in the 1860s the tumultuous period of the Taiping Rebellion. The families are those of two merchants, partners and friends, one Chinese, the other European. The central figures are: the beautiful, rebellious daughter of one family, an American naval officer with whom she falls in love, and the Dawager Empress of China, as she rises to absolute power. The Other Karen by Velda Johnston (novel) Catherine Mayhew, an aspiring aspir-ing actress, is hired by relatives to impersonate the long missing Karen in order to bring happiness into the last weeks of Karen's very ill grand mother. Arriving at Pinehaven in Maine, she is met by hostility from Joel Cartwright, who was Karen's lover. She wonders why the real Karen fled and why detectives couldn't find her. After two mysterious deaths, she and Joel follow Karen s trail to find the answers. The Tree of Death by Marcia Muller (mystery) When a wealthy patron donates a full-size ceramic tree of life to the new Museum of Mexican Arts in Santa Barbara, the museum's opening preparations become tense. The bequest is greedily accepted by the pompous and unpopular director Frank de Palma, and bitterly resented by the imaginative young curator, Elena Loiverez. Then, as visitors arrive for the open ing, Frank de Palma is found dead, crushed beneath the controversial tree and Elena is the prime suspect. Winter Grass by Richard Wheeler (western) the Birkenhead clan cuts miles of John "Quin" Putnam's new barbed wire fence, threatening his cattle and his carefully husbanded winter grass with their hungry long horns. Lawyer Nicole Aumont defends Quin's claim while Antonia "Missy" Novak, the orphaned girl he rescued from Indians, stands by Quin in his struggle against the clan. Soon, Missy's own past begins to make demands, threatening to undo the closeness of her life on the range. The Words of Martin Luther King, Jr. selected by Coretta Scott King (nonfiction) throughout his brief life, his words communicated his vi sion, his passion, and his faith, and they demonstrated his gift to inspire others to follow his lead. He asked to be remembered as a "drum ma jor for justice," and he is. This new volume of selections from Dr. King's speeches and writings is created as a "living memorial" to his philosophies and ideas. Lorctta P. Sweeny, Where Are You? by Patricia Reilly Giff (youth mystery) wearing her I Solve Crime T-shirt, the unsinkable Abby Jones is on the look-out for a new crime to solve. She and her timid friend Potsie don't have far to go once Abby finds Loretta P. Sweenv's wallet with a frightening note inside. Is the mysterious Loretta P. Each of the two programs will consist con-sist of color slides, an artifact display, and an entertaining narrative by Jeffrey Jef-frey N. Wolff. Mr. Wolff has a background of more than eight years of study and research in the field of Biblical Archeology. He has studied under some of the world's greatest archeologists in graduate school in Michigan and has traveled throughout the Middle East and North Africa to visit the major archeological sites. With all of the significant finds made in recent years, Mr. Wolff will be presenting a wealth of amazing facts, giving a new dimension to familiar stories in scripture. At 7:30 on Monday night: the Dead Sea Scrolls story. In 1947 a shepherd boy searching for a lost sheep electrifies elec-trifies the world when he stumbled into a cave and discovered the greatest find in the 20th century. The ancient leather scrolls he found in large earthen ear-then jars have affirmed that the Bible is more accurate than many scholars thought and has silenced many critics. At 7:30 on Tuesday night: the King Tut Story. You will be able to view the phenomenal treasures of Tutankhamen's dynasty and discover what light this sheds on the lif e of Moses. This program will feature mummies, papyri and authentic replicas from the tomb. The public is invited to come and enjoy en-joy these topics with their families. Wolff shows an egyptian idol which is part of the meetings on biblical archeology to be presented at the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Medical Center announces class The Ashley Valley Medical Center C-Section C-Section class will be held Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. in the hospital conference room. The class is available for any expectant parents who want to be prepared in the event they deliver their baby by C-Section. C-Section. Coaches who attend will receive a card which will enable them to accompany accom-pany their partner into surgery for the C-Section. The class lasts IV2 hours. The next scheduled prenatal class begins on January 4 with a C-Section Class on February 8. Contact Diane Spackman 789-5675 or the maternity desk at Ashley Valley Medical Center for more information.
