The Union Cougars pocketed a perfect record of 6-0 when they blanked blank-ed Fruita in Grand Junction, Colo., 7 to 0, Thursday. Union scored its only touchdown three minutes into the fourth quarter on a 17 yard pass from Cougar quarterback Chad Richard to Jeff Madsen. The touchdown drive Hunters pocket antelopes Vernal residents, Mike Herbert and Bob Thompson garnered the widest and narrowest spreads taken on the recent re-cent Wyoming antelope hunt. The widest spread was 16 inches and the narrowest spread was one inch, where the horn tips actually cross. The antelope were taken in Firehole Canyon Ca-nyon area. Thompson nabbed the antelope with the 16 inch spread and Herbert's antelope had a one inch spread. consisted of 65 yards. Mike Olsen connected con-nected on the extra point kick to present pre-sent a 7-0 lead to the Union Cougars. "Fruita attempted a field goal from the 18 yard line and we blocked the kick to turn the momentum around. Fruita drove the ball from their own 20 and we stopped them on our 18 yard line in the third quarter. The ball hit Steve Miller right square in the face mask and it rolled back 15 yards and out of bounds. We took over the ball on our 35 yard line. We used mostly running run-ning plays, dives, off-tackles, sweeps and traps up the middle, to move the ball into Fruita territory. We kept the ball on the ground. We got down to the 17 yard line and Richard rolled out to the right on a second down and seven yards to go play and passed it to Madsen for the touchdown," remarked remark-ed Union High School head football coach, Lee Marett. Marett added, "We had a good drive in the first quarter and it ended when Fruita intercepted us on the two yard line. Tony Winn went 29 yards on a screen pass that we almost scored on. Fruita gained the interception when a defender stepped in front of our receiver and picked off the pass." Fruita attempted a field goal in the first quarter, but it was off to the side. The game was played in a rainstorm. "Russell Nielson intercepted two passes and returned one 21 yards. Mike Olsen and Steve Miller had good games and also had seven tackles. Richard led the team with nine tackles," said Marret. "We had a real good defensive team effort. It was the best defensive game of the year for us. We shut off Fruita's passing attack as they completed only three passes. They are supposed to have a good passing attack." When asked to comment on Miller's blocked kick, which was a key play in the touchdown drive by the Cougars, Marret remarked, "Fruita's field goal kicker took five steps to get off the kick and we shifted everyone over half a step and confused their blockers. Miller came in untouched and blocked block-ed the kick." Union owns a 6-0 mark and is tied for first place in Region 9 with Morgan at 2-0.
