Vernal Ver-nal denies any shooting down and states that Maeser has a long history, of irresponsibility in water matters. Diplomatic sources state that the recent re-cent warming of relations in past months between these two countries may be over and a new cold war may be resuming. Because of the great distance involved, face to face discussions discus-sions between the two parties are rare. A compromise agreement whereby both parties could benefit would be so out of historical character and so contrary con-trary to current practice, that neither side is sure they could accept it. Experts Ex-perts studying the issue state that because of their divergent historical, economical, and religious backgrounds, a solution to the situation situa-tion seems unlikely in the century. :. .Meanwhile, in the Ashley Valley, residents wonder why world leaders cannot work together for the betterment better-ment of mankind. Signed, A Frustrated Taxpayer Name withheld upon request Taxes are out of hand Turn on lights Dear Editor: As one of the many people who drive to and from the Bonanza Power Plant every day, I'd like to ask a favor of those of you going the opposite way. Beginning Sept. 26, the majority of traffic will be headed toward the plant (south and east bound) from approximately approx-imately 6 a.m. until 7:30 a.m. and will be headed toward Vernal (north and west bound) from 3 p.m. until approximately approx-imately 4:30 p.m. For your benefit, as well as ours, if you're traveling against the main stream of traffic, please turn on your headlights. Your cooperation would be greatly appreciated. SUSAN HUSCH One of 500 drivers Why increase Dear Editor: I have a question. If the number of taxpayers in the county is growing and if everyone else in the county is having hav-ing as large a tax increase as I ( 100 percent in 2 years) how is the county using the incredible increase in revenue? I am guessing that there are a lot of other taxpayers in the county with the same question. I couldn't get an answer at the assessor's office. Maybe you could get an answer for all of us. To the Editor: Amid the constant clamor and hulabaloo raised over other more spectacular issues, it is easy to avoid the suggestions that loom forth in a story appearing in your paper more than a week ago detailing the mill levies of various units of local government. govern-ment. And this is regrettable for the story merits an indepth evaluation that unfortunately has never been forthcoming for-thcoming anywhere. And the mere enumeration of these cold statistics ought to suggest on the face of the matter mat-ter one quite salient truth ; and that is when public taxes have gotten out of hand it is merely a symptom of a more fundamental fact that spending has also gotten out of hand. In other words over-taxation is but a belated and unfortunate un-fortunate result of over-spending. Yet amid all of the bland allusions set forth in your story which but reiterate the excuses and apologies set forth by our public officials for these levies, an imperative fact seems to be avoided, namely; these figures themselves testify in crucial reality of the degree in which our public officials have abdicated their responsibilities as guardians of the public purse. And the matter suggests another crucial fact; what with all these competing units of local government where has there been any attempt on the part of the citizens to monitor these various agencies in order to make sure that their budgeting procedures are sound and responsible. And in this regard, one need not be an engineering expert to detect that In the volley wide sewer project there have been glaring evidences of inefficiency; neither need one be a financial genius to suspect that there are gross examples of waste and misexpenditure of moneys in this project. .Similarly, it ought to be evident evi-dent that when the County Commissioners Commis-sioners can provide for an addition to the Court House without providing an Item for the same in their budget, something is Licking and rrmiM in the diM-lroure that wight to be required on the part of lbre public olficiaU, And the glib manner in which this Mnry h; been reported notwithstanding. notwithstan-ding. e flu titien have brm Ux (tod trmi.!i m mir own mpiwiibilii)- in that we have hern willing to taVe t fare Vdlwe the nialrmrnu qf pnttiirianit and lipinrle public official whnt if (u-me ol duty might to ferjuire to dig drrply inlo all of the finair ial firnf4 and minulr ol th board ami ctwv tniMion wilh the id-3 in mind (4 acfr ing attention oi the way that Ihrjf pmd the piMc monr) r u h"pe thai three figurr, will be repealing in Ibe rte that tbry will Mimwlaie an aarrtw- of hf mantwf in which puhht mnir ate appT'Vtia!d in this rtwinly; And wbrfl e ate aWe t pwt the frin r public rpndii'irt" e will hae put the rein en lae a f II trprtl?iiliy Jwff.
