Champion- and heavy at times in the tournament, but the main focus of the tournament has been just having a fun time out on the court and may the best man or woman win. . This has been the year for tennis tournaments in the Uintah Basin. Vernal Ver-nal City and UBIC Tournaments were held during the summer and now the Vernal ExpressVernal . Recreation Tennis Tournament is going on. Rod Conklin won the men's singles crown in the Vernal City Tennis Tournament and the UBIC, but a new champ will be crowned in the Vernal ExpressVernal Ex-pressVernal Recreation Tournament as Conklin was defeated in the third round of the meet by Steve Henderson. It's just a little white, yellow or Pi Tennis players from Roosevelt and Vernal have been competing in the Vernal Express Vernal Recreation Tennis Tournament this week on the local tennis courts. The action gets hot green ball and shouldn't cause a lot of problems, but it does. It bounces toward the tennis player and he stretches stret-ches with his racket and tries to hit the ball, but instead the ball is missed. The next time the ball hits the racket, it does one of many things, hits the net, goes over the net, but out of bounds, sails ever the fence or sets up an easy return by the opposing player. Sometimes the ball is the tennis player's friend as everything goes right. The ball meets the racket, sails over the net, stays in bounds and the opposing player fails on his return shot. The Dinos shutout the Uintah Utes, 25-0, in the season opener and most Ute football fans were disappointed in the outcome as for years getting beat by Carbon High School in football meant that the losing team was in the bottom of the football barrel. However, getting get-ting beat by Carbon High School this year is a whole different story as the Dinos have a bigger and better team than they have had in years. So getting beaten by Carbon isn't the end of football foot-ball world anymore. Carbon beat Tooele in the second game of the season for a 2-0 record and the night after the win by Carbon over Uintah this reporter heard a Carbon fan remark, "We will know how good a team we have when we play Fruita, Colo." The Dinos fans must be pretty happy with with Carbon team as they blanked Fruita, 28 to 0, Friday, Sept. 9. The Uintah L'tcs have shown improvement im-provement from one game to the next. Carbon jumped out to an early lead in the season opener against Uintah, but the Utes turned in fine defensive play in the rest of the game and shutout the Dinos in the second half. The Utes scored only one touchdown in their 24 to 6 loss to Morgan in the semnd game, but they shined through the air as they turned in one of the finest passing games in some time. Uintah was only two seconds away from a win over Union, but the Union Cougar MajjMi a miracle with a last necond play from quarterback Chad Richard to Scott Witwin for a touch-down, touch-down, which lied up the game at 66.
