Show B-6 The Park Record Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, May 23-26, 2015 P.C. Karate to host tournament National Qualifier will take place at Basin Rec May 30 Submitted by Park City Karate Park City Karate will be hosting the 7th annual USA KarateUtah State Championships and National Qualifier, on Saturday, May 30, at the Basin Recreation Fieldhouse. The competition will include kata (traditional karate forms) and kumite (sparring) and all ages and karate styles are invited to compete. The tournament will bring some of the top karate competitors from around the country, including Texas, Arizona, Colorado, California and Oregon. Additionally, members of the USA Karate National Team are expected to compete. National Team Coach Tommy Hood will present a special kumite seminar on Friday, May 29. Sensei Hood has competed at the world level and will present a seminar that will help karate students hone their kumite skills. The seminar will be held at the Basin Recreation Fieldhouse beginning at 6 p.m. The seminar is open to all karate students 8 years and older. The cost for the seminar is $35 per student. Additionally, a USA Karate Referee Training and Certification course will be held on Friday, May 29, at 6 p.m. Sensei Fariba Madani, a member of the USA-NKF Referee Committee will be conducting this course. This is an excellent opportunity for athletes or anyone interested in the rules of karate to gain a better understanding of the competition rules. The Utah State Karate Championship is also a regional qualifier for the National Competition that will be held in July in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Burton and Atkinson became the first two All-Americans from Park City. Atkinson, Burton, Cole Flinders, Christensen and Hales earned first-team all-state honors. Chase Flinders and Peterson earned second-team all-state honors. Tobin Greenwald was an honorable mention. Park City Coach Andy Langendorf earned the Coach of the Year award and Nick Gradinger was named Assistant Coach of the Year. Girls' LAX earns top honors After a season in which the Park City High School girls' lacrosse team won its secondstraight state title and also went undefeated for the second year in a row, the Miners earned their fair share of postseason accolades. Headlining the awards were midfielders Hannah Hyatt and Marina Mayo, who both earned First-Team All-American honors. Defender Ellie Meyer was an honorable mention All-American. Hyatt and Meyer were also named All-State MVPs for their positions, while Hyatt, Meyer and Mayo were all named to the First-Team All-State team. At- tacker Ellie Faulk earned Second-Team All-State honors. Faulk, Meyer, Hyatt and Mayo were named to the D1 North AllConference First Team.
