Continued From A-1 Businesses watch case said, "put a damper" on the idea of improvements. "I'm not prepared to put any major capital expenditures into it," Anderson said. The lawsuit, filed by the PCMR side in the spring of 2012 and now involving a countersuit, involves most of the terrain at the resort. The lower terrain, the Resort Center and the parking lots are not part of the case. PCMR claims it renewed the leases on the land in the case and it was denied a right of first refusal on the land when Talisker Land Holdings, LLC reached an agreement with Vail Resorts for the Colorado firm to operate Canyons Resort. The deal could be extended to include the disputed terrain at PCMR depending on the outcome of the lawsuit. The judge is expected to make important rulings later in the spring or early in the summer. If the judge rules against PCMR, resort officials have indicated they would remove the lifts. The other side has argued PCMR is prohibited from doing so. PCMR has said it could pursue an action sports camp on part of the parking lots and the lower terrain if it loses the case. PCMR is selling season passes for the 2014-2015 season with a caveat addressing the possibility of the resort not opening. It is the third consecutive year a caveat has been attached to marketing material. There has been uncertainty since the lawsuit was filed, but it seems there have been more jitters since late last summer as the case intensified, including the filing of a de facto eviction notice against PCMR in August. Vail Resorts recently offered to buy the base area and the parking lots. The PCMR side said it would not agree to a buyout. City Hall, meanwhile, last fall conducted an exercise to consider the impacts on municipal finances if PCMR did not open for a ski season or operated for one year using only the lower terrain. Aloha Ski & Snowboard opened at the Resort Center in the late 1990s, and, after succeeding, opened another location there about seven years ago. One of the two co-owners, Greg Ottoson, said the store has completed its merchandise purchases for the next ski season. The case did not influence buying decisions, he said, describing Aloha Ski & Snowboard as being "cautiously optimistic." He said the stores are operating as if the lawsuit will not impact the next ski season. "Any decision that was made in terms of the buy, we made on status quo," he said. "Not any impending disaster." Political party possible State bids for the 2016 Democratic convention By JAY HAMBURGER The Park Record For display advertising, please call a sales representative at 435-6499014 or email val@parkrecord.com As Salt Lake City competes for the 2016 Democratic National Convention, it is expected that Park City will have a role in the capital city's bid. It will be the second time in four years that Park City will be involved in a bid for a national political convention after Salt Lake City's unsuccessful attempt to land the Republican gathering in 2012. Matt Lyon, the executive director of the Utah Democratic Party, said Park City is a "great attraction" in the state. He grew up in Park City. "I think Park City is a great asset. I hope it would be used in some way" in a bid, Lyon said, mentioning the possibility of some of the people in the state for the convention staying in Park City. Four years ago, as Salt Lake City was unsuccessfully competing for the Republican National Convention in 2012, Park City was tapped as the bid package was put together. The bid organizers were particularly interested in the lodging properties in Park City. The Salt Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau at the time said the lodging industry in Park City indicated it would make approximately 3,900 rooms available. The total represented just more than 20 percent of the rooms the organizers were attempting to secure within a one-hour drive of EnergySolutions Arena, where the convention would have been held. The organizers then called Park City important to the bid. People involved at the time said a convention would have provided a boost to the Park City economy. Continued From A-1 Fundraising goal topped Women's Giving Fund Committee co-chair Jody Gross announced 1,154 donors had contributed. Furthermore, because the steering committee surpassed its goal of signing up 1,000 individuals, Zions Bank was adding another $35,000 to the fund. Moss told the assembled crowd, "Our motto is ‘We are stronger together' and it is true. The Women's Giving Fund grew because we wanted to make lives better for women and children in our Summit County community." She added that while the bulk of the money came from individual donations, Wells Fargo Bank and Canyons resort also made significant contributions. "Park City women like a challenge and a big goal and thanks to challenge grants from Canyons/Vail, Wells Fargo and Zions we surpassed all expectations." Gross also singled out her co-chair Susan Richer (who could not be at the event) for pushing beyond the $1 million benchmark. As the sun warmed the plaza at New Park Town Center and approximately 60 newly minted Women's Giving Fund founding members mingled, Gross added, "The dollar impact is only the beginning of our story. The Women's Giving Fund has built a community of like-minded women all wanting to improve the lives of women and children in our Summit County village." John Cumming, the CEO of Park City Mountain Resort parent Powdr Corp., said in a letter: "If you win the lawsuit you'll certainly have succeeded in buying a chair at the negotiation table, but you will not own the table, or the resort. So we must negotiate a resolution, even if Vail wins the lawsuit." Get all the latest Park Record updates. That work would not impact the playability of the course, he added. Regarding the denied relocation of the ski maintenance building to Canyons Resort Drive, White said TCFC may consider appealing Jasper's decision. The company has until Monday to file intent to appeal. If it does not appeal, it will look at other possible locations for the facility with the Canyons Specially Planned Area. Other benchmarks TCFC must complete by this month are the posting of additional bond monies and commencing the remaining restoration work of Willow Creek. Jasper said he would sign the letter which requested an extension for the transfer of the golf lands to July 15 and that he was impressed with the work done by TCFC on the course. "I'm very pleased with the progress you've made and the commitment you've made to have a playable golf course," Jasper said. "Irrespective of some dilemmas, you've [shown] you're willing to do what you need to do to get it done." Bill Malone, the president and CEO of the Park City Chamber/Bureau, said he anticipates a Park City role in a 2016 bid would be similar to the one for the GOP convention. He said he expects many convention-goers would stay in Park City. "I think we have a certain amount of hotel rooms that would be needed," he said, adding, "Our product that's available up here, I recall they were very interested in." Malone noted Park City's lineup of restaurants as well. The Republican National Committee in 2010 sent a delegation to Salt Lake City as it considered sites for the convention two years later. The delegation, which included the chairman at the time, visited Park City as a part of the evaluation process. The delegation stopped at Stein Eriksen Lodge and took short bus tour of Park City on a snowy spring day. Park City has a long history of hosting top tier political events and nationally known figures in politics. Mitt Romney, a Park City homeowner for a second time, held gatherings in 2012 and 2013, with the one in 2012 being especially notable as he had secured the Republican White House nomination by the time of the event. Later in 2012, after Election Day, a large Democratic event was held in Deer Valley drawing the chair of the Democratic National Committee and party executives. There has also been a series of highprofile political fundraisers in Park City during recent election cycles. Some of the figures who have visited include Barack Obama before winning the White House, Vice President Joe Biden and President Bush. H The Park Record.
