Show Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, August 10-13, 2013 The Park Record A-3 PURVEYOR OF GREAT STEAK AND SEAFOOD FOR 37 YEARS! CITY BEAT CITY EDITOR: JAY HAMBURGER 649-9014 EXT. 111 | citynews@parkrecord.com Two raised, spent nothing The City Council campaign has cost little thus far By JAY HAMBURGER The Park Record Two of the six candidates for a seat on the Park City Council neither raised any campaign funds nor spent a penny on their bids through late July, a rarity in a City Hall election that highlights what has been a lackluster political season. According to financial statements filed at City Hall as the primary election approaches, Lisa Wilson and Bill McKenna did not raise any campaign funds and did not put any money toward the election. Wilson's statement was dates July 28 while McKenna's was signed on July 25. Wilson and McKenna are seen as the two outsider candidates in the primary. Each of the others on the ballot has either served in elected office in Park City or served on City Hall panels. Neither of the two is believed to have heavily campaigned in the nearly two months since the close of the filing window when candidates were required to submit campaign paperwork. Wilson, though, has continued her long-running opposition to a development in Deer Valley. McKenna said he does not plan to accept outside campaign donations to avoid the potential of conflicts of interest should he be elected. Wilson did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment. Candidate spending in City Hall elections has generally dropped in the last decade, after a series of high-dollar campaign in the era of the 2002 Winter Olympics. But it is unusual for two candidates to have neither raised nor spent any money through the first financial reporting period. Alex Butwinski, an incumbent City Councilor seeking re-election, led the field in campaign spending through the reporting period. Highlights of the four candidates who raised and spent money include: ● Butwinski raised $175 through donations of less than $50 each. Since each of the donations was less than $50, Butwinski was not required to identify the donors. He spent $1,462.14, more than half of which was for a campaign website. Other expenditures included a parade entry, campaign buttons and stickers. ● Tim Henney self-financed most of his campaign, reporting that he contributed $1,500 of his total of $2,065 raised. Paul Boyes and Heidi Gatch each contributed $250. Henney spent $1,268.89, mostly on yard signs, graphic design and website design. ● Cindy Matsumoto, an incumbent, reported raising $510, mostly through contributions of less than $50. Julie Hopkins donated $100, the only person listed as giving more than $50. Matsumoto spent $133.97 on postcards, printing and a parade entry. ● Mary Wintzer raised $1,792.30, with $800 of the total coming from her personal monies. Ed and Debbie Axtell donated $300 while Debra and Peter Cole gave $250. Marianne Cone, a former City Councilor, provided $200 worth of design and layout work. Cash-heavy wallet is found Visitor from Ohio, honest, turns it in to the police By JAY HAMBURGER The Park Record A woman visiting Park City from Ohio probably was the most honest person in town on Tuesday. The Park City Police Department reported that the woman found a wallet in Old Town and turned it into the police. Inside the wallet, the police said, was $1,080 in cash, seven credit cards and a personal check writ- ten to the wallet's owner for $10,000. Rick Ryan, a police captain, said the wallet was turned in at the Park Avenue police station at 4:30 p.m. He said the woman found the wallet in the road at the corner of Swede Alley and Heber Avenue, a high-traffic intersection just off Main Street. The black leather wallet was apparently made by the designer brand Salvatore Ferragamo. "There's still good people out there, still good, honest people," Ryan said. The woman is from Dayton. The police did not identify her. The woman's age was unknown. The Police Department found the wallet owner's identification inside. The owner is a 36-year- old man from North Miami, Fla. Ryan said the police found the man through his driver license and credit cards. Ryan said a business partner of the wallet's owner contacted the Police Department at about the same time with the owner's cellphone number. The police contacted the owner and told the man the wallet was at the station. The man picked up the wallet at about 6 p.m. that day. "He was happy to receive his property back," Ryan said. Ryan said the man told the police he last saw the wallet while he was buying coffee, but it was not clear when that purchase was made. Ryan said there is nothing suspicious about the episode.
