The Park Record Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, July 21-24, 2012 Kotsenburg's quest for the cover Parkite boarder closes in on a childhood dream By CHRISTOPHER KAMRANI The Park Record As he describes it, Sage Kotsenburg was in the right place at the right time. The Park City snowboarder, coming off a silver medal at the 2012 Winter X Games in men's slopestyle, took a chance when no one else would - and he's seeing the benefits. At 18, Kotsenburg earned a potential spot on the cover of TransWorld Snowboarding magazine after a memorable April afternoon in Montafon, Austria. But Kotsenburg's quest for the cover isn't set in stone just yet. His Nike team, including himself and three other snowboarders, Scotty Lago, Peetu Piiroinen and Gjermund Braaten, were part of 2012 Team Shoot Out put on by TransWorld. Also participating in the event to earn a spot on the cover of the magazine were teams from Special Blend, Burton and Oakley. According to the TransWorld website, four invited teams each chose a location and worked there for 10 days. The teams compiled footage for respective team videos and countless photos. The top shot from each team was selected, thus providing four potential covers. The magazine has left it up to voters on social media sites to determine which cover is the most jaw-dropping. As of Friday morning, the Park City snowboarder said he was in first place by roughly 200 votes. "It will probably be close, but I need to win it," he said in an interview from Mount Hood, Ore., Friday morning. "I can't just get a (possible) cover and then get beat. I can- Photo courtesy Kami Tarantino Park City's Sage Kotsenburg smiles as he holds up a magazine and poster of his memorable jump in Austria in April that could land him on the cover of TransWorld Snowboarding magazine. not do that. I would love to win." Kotsenburg's 30-foot drop off a cliff in Montafon, which he hit multiple times with his versatile bag of tricks, eventually earned him the spot for the Nike team. At the magazine's offices during the release of the cover photos, the Parkite stood calmly not expecting much. Then they announced his name. "We watched all the covers be unveiled," he said. "They started taking them all out and said, ‘Here's Nike's, and he actually came down here today. Sage, come on up.' I thought, ‘There's no way.' Getting a cover, you have to be in such the right place at the right time. I guess I just was this time. It was crazy." Kotsenburg, the only member of the Nike team to soar off that cliff in Austria, said he recalls looking at the photos and thought some of the other shots were more impressive at first. "It definitely looked cool from the bottom," he said. "People just weren't down to hit it because it was a super gnarly drop and I was like, ‘Screw it, guys, we need to win this.'" The voting, Kotsenburg said, expects to come down to the wire. And while the youngster waits to see if he'll pass another milestone in his career, Kotsenburg said he will do what he does best during the warm summer months: chill. "I've just been beaching it up, skating a bunch and relaxing," he said. "It's been awesome."
