Show Wed/Thurs/Fri, April 11-13, 2012 RED CARD ROBERTS Dress for success - and Ed Calendar By Amy Roberts It's about that time of year when your New Year's resolutions - to exercise more, spend more time with friends and give more to charity - are becoming hazy memories of commitment. Lucky for you there's an easy way to bring them back into focus and kill all three of your promises with one proverbial stone. Running with Ed is back, and you've only got about a week to get your team of friends together for this challenging, yet fun, relay race, which is a fundraiser for the Park City Education Foundation. Each team of five will run, preferably in costume, a total of 41 miles, with schools being the transition points for the relay. The money raised supports various educational programs. Elissa Aten, a board member for the Park City Education Foundation and volunteer organizer for Running with Ed, says this event is quickly becoming a Park City favorite. "It's more about the experience than the finish line. People love dressing in funny, themed costumes and jogging through town. The best part is no one has to be a career runner. This is a fun run for a great cause," she said. With the shortest leg of the relay being just over a mile and the longest leg about seven miles, it's fair to say most people can do it in a tutu, Hawaiian grass skirt, or - my personal favorite from last year - a full-body banana costume. In fact, the crazier the dress, the better the team's chance of winning. "There are great prizes for the top fundraisers, costumes, and of course the fastest runners," Elissa promises. "And the top three fundraising teams get free entry for next year's event." Elissa says they're asking each team of five runners to commit to raising $1,000 this year. And with so many charities in town to give to, runners have to get a little creative when they ask for donations. "I reach out to my friends and family out of state. It can be tough for them to want to Continued From B-1 registration deadline is April 14. The league will be held at the Basin Recreation Fieldhouse on Saturdays starting on April 21 and running until June 2. Log onto www.basinrecreation.org or call (435) 655-0999 for more information. So I remind them they stay with me each winter and how much they save on lodging by taking over my guest room. That usually gets them to chip in a little." All the teams who raise at least $1,000 will be entered into a raffle (opportunity drawing here in Utah) for some YOUTH SPRING VOLLEYBALL BEGINNING FENCING FOR JUNIORS The Park City Fencing Academy at the Park City Day School in Pinebrook is holding Beginning Fencing for Juniors from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the following Tuesdays and Thursdays in April: April 12, 17, 19, 24 and 26. And Elissa says even people without kids in the school system should run with Ed to raise money for the schools. "A school system really is the backbone of a community. High-quality schools increase our home values and the education students receive and the unique programs they get to take advantage of with these funds, turn them into strong leaders, which will benefit our community in the future. Most of us have benefited from public education in some way, and this a great way to give back." As a product of public education myself, (and the product of two parents who were both teachers), I hope to see you dust off the resolutions you made a few months ago and go for a run with your besties.
