Show Wildcats preparetorchampionship CHRISTOPHER KAMRANI Of the Record staff T\vo perennial high school powerhouses will square off again today for another chance to raise a state championship trophy. It's the rematch: the South Summit Wildcats against the 2A defending champion San Juan Broncos at Southern Utah University in Cedar City. The Wildcats (10-1) have their shot to rectify losing their last two to the Broncos, including a 26-6 loss at home on Sept. 17 and a 7-0 loss in last year's 2A title game. San Juan has won 19 straight, running its record to 11-0 on the 2010 season, and is looking to take a second straight title. If South Summit wins today's' state championship game, it will be the first time a Wildcat team has defeated the Broncos. San Juan is 5-0 all time against South Summit. The San Juan rushing attack has its threats in Colby Redd, who has rushed for 841 yards and six touchdowns on 104 carries this season, and Ryan Lyman, who has rushed for 451 yards and eight touchdowns on just 55 carries. Both Redd and Lyman average over eight yards per carry. South Summit's offense will have to lead sustained drives in% order for the defense to have its rest, and will be leaning on senior playmakers Levi Thompson and Trevor Rydalch and ace-inthe-hole Hayden Packard, who ran for 142 yards on just seven carries in South Summit's 38-7 semifinal win over Millard last weekend. Thompson, a senior running back, has rushed for 1,134 yards and 18 touchdowns. He will be asked to shoulder the load to help quarterback Parker Anderson. Today's title showdown will kick off at 2 p.m. at Eccles Coliseum. San Juan sports arguably the most tightfisted defense in all of 2A football. The Broncos have pitched a shutout in seven of their 11 games this season. While South Summit features a high-powered and versatile offense that averages nearly 39 points a game, San Juan counters with nearly a 34-point-per-game average on offense. The focal point for the Wildcats' defense will no doubt be the Shumway brothers: Cameron, who is the star quarterback for the Broncos, and his brother, Stetler, who is second on the team in receptions with 26 for 508 yards and six touchdowns. Stetler is also the team's leading tackier with 106 total tackles. Cameron Shumway has thrown for 1,940 yards this season, with 19 touchdowns and six interceptions. He has a completion percentage of nearly 58 percent. He also leads the defense in interceptions with five. out to USSA in the mid1990s to form a future joint venture. "This is just going to be a great event. It's going to put boardercross in the spotlight." Tomlinson, who is a graduate of the Winter Sports School in Park City and finished in the top 20 in his first snowboarding World Cup, is thrilled to.be able to put on a show in his backyard. "It's definitely an advantage to sleep at home," he said. "I'm really excited to be able to race here. I live 15 minutes away from this mountain." As for racing against a snowboarding pioneer like Palmer, Tomlinson is in awe. "It's crazy/' he said. "I used to play Shaun Palmer's pro snowboarding video game when I was like 10."
