A-12 Wed/Thurs/Fri, February 3-5, 201Q The Park Record Obituaries AY WE WERE Eugene Stewart Campbell November 5, 1921 -January 28, 2010;|T; Colonel William Montague Ferry By Judy Dykman, researcher, Park City Museum • In the 1870s, a number of wealthy, successful businessmen men who became known as the "Michigan Bunch" arrived in Park City hoping to discover rich ores in the new mining camp. T\vo of the group, Edward P. Ferry and his older brother, Colonel William Montague Ferry, from Grand Haven, Mich., made large fortunes and became highly respected. Edward arrived first in 1873 and purchased and developed the Flagstaff Mine, built the Marsac Mill (below), developed the Woodside Mine and the Anchor Mine and consolidated claims in the Pinyon Ridge and Crescent Mine. Five years later William, his older brother (top right), followed and they continued to .prosper. An engineer and machinist, William patented numerous inventions. In Michigan he erected the Ottawa Iron Works, which manufactured steam engines, propellers and many types of machinery. Despite opposing Lincoln's election and the Civil War, he joined the Union army inl861 and rapidly rose from private to colonel. He returned to Grand Haven after the war and became involved in local politics. Over the next 15 years, he filled several high government offices and assisted in the renovation of Michigan's constitution. Some believe his health was already failing and he was going blind when his family moved to Park City. Working together, the Ferrys invested in the Utah Mine, located seven iron claims, and obtained the Mayflower, Walker, and Webster mines. William also built his wife a beautiful Victorian home at the mouth of Thaynes Canyon that became a Cultural center for Protestants. (The home was later moved to Park Meadows and renovated.). William was also very involved in Utah's Democratic, Liberal and American parties from 1880 until his death in 1905. He ran unsuccessfully for congressional delegate in 1886 and governor in 1904 on the American ticket. He opposed Utah statehood in 1888 and made an effort to limit the Mormons' power throughout the state. In 1903, the Presbyterian Church asked for help in erecting what became Westminster College in Salt Lake City. William donated 22 acres for the college and $15,000 to construct Ferry Hall off 13th East and 17th South. The next year, when Park City miners asked for his help in the construction of the Miners Hospital, he assisted them and furnished some of the rooms. Colonel Ferry was almost blind and seriously asthmatic when he perished at his Park City home on January 2, 1905. His funeral was held at his home and is remembered as being the largest held in Park City to that date. Following the service, his body was shipped to Grand Haven for burial. His eulogies praised his patriotism, civic mindedness, philanthropy, and devotion to Presbytcrianism and God, but still fall short in recognizing him as a great man. Our good friend, Gino, has passed on to the great snooker table in the sky. We will miss him. Gene was proud to have served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, of which he had many fond memories. Always a salesman, first of cars, and then in the billiards industry, which was more his passion. His proudest accomplishment was the house he built in Emigration Canyon. You can refer to an archived article in the local Park City paper for further details of Gene's life: www.park record.com, Gene Campbell, June, 1,2007. Many thanks to all the people who gave him comfort and dignity in his last years: the VA Hospital, Applegate HomeCare & Hospice, Meals on Wheels, Summit County Sheriff, and Danville Services. Please pick an organization of your choice if you would like to make a donation. He will rejoin his family in their ancestral plot in his beloved Bellevue, Idaho, on Monday, Feb. 1,2010.
