Show B-3 The Park Record Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, September 12-15, 2009 PREP SPORTS: PLAYER PROFILES On the 19th hole Ethan Efsenbarth Park City High School senior Ethan Eisenbarth has been playing competitive golf for five years. He said he picked golf because it turned out he wasn't very good at basketball, and he lives on a golf course. Eisenbarth said he is averaging mid- to low-70s this year and plans to continue playing golf after high school, but only as a hobby. "I'm definitely going to go to college, but not to play golf," he said. "I'm there tc learn first and foremost and you have to be exceptionally skilled at golf to get a scholarship." However, coach, George Murphy, believes Eisenbarth has what it takes. "Ethan has one of the strongest work ethics on the team," Murphy said. "He is our co-captain and is a positive role mode! for the younger players. He also can drive it 300 plus which is impressive. Ethan has been solid this season. He has come back with a purpose and something to prove this season." The Miners, as a team, have won every tournament this season. However, Eisenbarth said he has other plans once the school year is over. He wants to go to college in California where it's warm nearly year round, and he wants to spend more time with his girlfriend, dance-team member Lauren Carlson, who he said he is "very much" in love with. GRAYSON WESTIPARKRECORD Behind the tackles Levi Thompson Wildcats varsity football running back Levi Thompson is confident South Summit will defeat the North Summit Braves in this year's highly anticipated rivalry game on Oct. 16. The Braves took the state title the last two years and crushed the Wildcats 41-14 last year. But Thompson said things are going to be different this year. The Wildcats are 3-0 so far this season (results from Friday's game against Delta were not available at press time). So far this season, Thompson is averaging 11 yards a carry and has 13 carries for 396 yards. He's one of the few football players to become a starter during his sophomore year. "Levi has the potential to play college ball," Assistant Coach Dan Eckert said. "He will be a first team all-stater this year." Thompson, a junior, played varsity baseball his freshman year and varsity soccer his sophomore year. He also plays forward on the varsity basketball team. However, if he could choose to play any sport in college, Thompson said he'd pick football. He's received interest from a few colleges already but said he isn't ready to make a decision. Thompson comes from an athletic family. His dad played running back at SSHS, both his older sisters danced, and one of them also played volleyball and basketball for the Wildcats. Hockey team shorthanded Miners gear up for first game against Juan Diego By JEN WATKINS Of the Record staff , The Park City High School hockey team is gearing up for their season opener against Juan Diego at the Ice Arena on Sept. 23 at 8:15 p.m. The hockey team was in a different division last year and has never played Juan Diego before. "1 don't know what Juan Diego has,*' goalie coach Bob Mindell said. Only two weeks into practice, Mindell said he can see some improvement in the Miners and he's not worried about how they'll do in their first game. The team has been practicing three times a week to prepare for their upcoming game. Mindell said they are working on breaking out of the defensive zone, getting control of the puck and making offensive plays. He wants the kids to learn to get the opposing team's goaltender out of position, as well as passing to each other and looking for the open guy. "If we play like a team, we can pretty much beat anybody," he said. "Hockey is really a team sport because there's so much happening so fast, they have to help each other." Mindell said the junior varsity and varsity teams combined have only 15 players, and they are hoping for more players before their season starts. "If we were in Minnesota, we'd have guys lined up down the street to try out," he said. Mindell said the team doesn't have any superstars this year, though their only female, Laura Kubeki, is one of their best players. "She's quite good," Mindell said. "She can play any position." The team lost their "primadonnas" last year, he said. "They graduated or left," he said. "They're an insidious downer on a team sport." He said the goal for this year's team is to focus on being cohesive and not badmouthing each other. He said the team struggled with that last year.
