Chris Briscoe, director of golf at The Homestead Resort in Midway, said June - one of his biggest months of the year - has been down 25 to 30 percent. He said last Saturday was a merry-go-round as golfers came in and out of the rain trying to finish their games. Unfortunately, there's no way to make up profits lost in the early part of the season. Golfers love the spring and lose enthusiasm by the time fall rolls around. Tim Shea sells golf balls, tees and gloves at Wolf Summit Golf & Hockey at Kimball Junction. He said if people aren't on the course, they aren't buying supplies from him. Some courses have been closed because they don't want golf carts damaging soggy greens. Scott House, program director at White Pine Touring, said several group outdoor recreation tours have cancelled, including a group last Saturday. John Brooks, the manager there, said Thursday was "crazy busy," but the first part of the month was weak. It hasn't been dead, he said, but combined with the economy, the weather was bad news. Brooks is looking forward to the rest of the summer, though. He's expecting to benefit from Parkites taking more "staycations." Rock climbing and fishing are also less expensive than renting a boat or an ATV, he said. Andrea Hewson, owner of LOYAL SERVICE Guaranteed seven working day turnaround on all custom framing PARK RECORD FILE PHOTO A car splashes through Bonanza Dr. and Kearns Blvd. last April during a rain storm. Bunny's Club in Coalville, gets a lot of spill-over business from Echo Reservoir that was underused this month. "It's bad/'she said. "We're hanging on right now just waiting for them to come, it's been very slow." She anticipates the Fourth of July weekend to be big, but has had to cancel many "cook outs" she planned for June to promote her specials. Steve Solomon at Zoom on Main Street hasn't been able to open his deck - a popular attraction to the restaurant much of this spring. "We've definitely had some feedback from people saying they drove by and saw the patio was closed so kept driving," he said. "I've noticed a decline in our covers for sure." His restaurant's concert series started Thursday night, and he spent the day looking at the sky with fingers crossed. It did rain, but the band played on. Adam Pulley with Bear River Lodge east of Kamas said fewer campers in the mountains has meant declining retail sales. But not everyone minds the rain. Brad Giebel with Recreation Ventures in Kamas rents ATV's for people "We're still doing very well - not one bit off," he said. Sales of equipment are down because of the economy, but because fishing gear is already waterproof, rain doesn't affect purchasing habits much, he said. The National Weather Service said average rainfall for Park City in June is less than an inch and a half. This month has seen about four inches so far. He said many customers prefer the mud to dust and came anyway. "For the most part it was consistent. Some people rescheduled." he said. Mike Nalette at Trout Bum 2 said many anglers like the rain because it clears up the water from the heavy and delayed winter run off, oxygenates the water for the fish and washes bugs and other food sources into the water.
