At the start of this school year, a group of twenty students at Park City High school, along with club founder and president Cheyenne Zambrano and club advisor Ms. Pam Carlquist, gathered together to form the Kenya Club. Upon traveling to Kenya, and seeing firsthand how just a few people could make a big difference in the lives of many, Cheyenne decided to organize the club to give Other students the opportunity to help those less fortunate. The Kenya Club works in allegiance with Beacon Humanitarian, a locally run nonprofit organization, headed by Dan and Carolyn Zambrano. Beacon Humanitarian has already conducted many humanitarian projects in Kenya, including the building of wells and schools. The Kenya Club plans on traveling to the Kibwezi Region of Kenya this summer. There they will build a functional resource center, complete with the region's first computers with internet access. Currently the average enrollment rate in Kenya is approximately 23%. with 42 million people never having received any formal education. The resource center will offer new educational opportunities to the people of the Kibwezi region and will link students in Park City, via the internet, with thosejstudents in Kenya using the resource center. The estimated cost for* the entire project is $150,000. ^ In order to fund their project, the students launched their first event, which took place on Thursday, December 4th, at Kimball Arts Center. There, the Kenya Club stationed three professionally designed and decorated Christmas trees, which were donated by local businesses; Slicks and Stones, Chesa Verde, Silver Cricket, and the Home Depot. The trees are on display in the Kimball Arts Center, and all of the profits generated from the sale of the trees will go directly to the funding of the resource center. The Kenya Club is also going to be at the Tanger Outlet Center offering gift-wrapping services for a small fee on December 20 from 10 a.m: to 7p.m. For more information or to make From left, Kenya Club members Cassie Rothman, teacher advisor Pam Carlquist, Sheridan Zambrano and Cheyenne Zambrano pose in front of a tree donated by Sticks n' Stones. UVU provides gifii for local families Submitted by Utah Valley University Wasatch Campus Tis' the season to open our hearts as well as our wallets to help those around us that are less fortunate in these tough economic times. The UVU Wasatch Campus took on the task of providing Christmas for three very deserving families here in Wasatch County. The student representatives and their advisor at UVU Wasatch have been busy little elves finding families that needed some extra help this year and assigning gifts that each member of the family needed. They were able to find three very deserving families here in the Heber Valley to provide Christmas for this Holiday season. UVU student reps decorated a tree loaded with angels that individuals could'take off and go shopping for the angel that they had chosen. "It was hGM^varftiirfg ; to go had asked for;" said student life advisor, Katie Young, "There weren't games or toys on the children's lists, but shoes, coats and lurking 435-649-5000 ext. 4016 www.
