"This is a very exciting event," said Margaret Hunt, Executive Director of the Utah Arts Council. "In preparation for the 50th anniversary of the Writing Competition, we took a look at the program to see if it was still relevant to Utah's writing scene today. What we found was that by changing the Annual Writing Competition novel category to a first-book competition, we could highlight some of Utah's up-andcoming writers who in past years had to compete against the heavyweights. "Through the creation of this new fellowship, we can better cele- REDSTONE CINEMA 8 brate and highlight the established writers of the state." The new fellowship will' be launched as a separate'tMhjj&ttion, beginning in September of 2008. Competition is open to writers who have published at least one book in their category of entry. The submitted works will be read and judged by an independent, established writer from outside of Utah. Fellowship guidelines will be posted on the Utah Arts Council website at arts.utah.gov.
